Job description

Internship Opportunity

Thank you so much for your interest in an Internship with The Wild Animal Sanctuary. The Sanctuary is a unique environment where interns can gain valuable experiences in a Non-Profit Sanctuary setting. The Wild Animal Sanctuary offers many exciting internship opportunities at three out of four facilities in a variety of field including; Education, Animal Husbandry, Diet and Nutrition, Event Coordination, Development/Fundraising, and Public Relations. Please note the Sanctuary does not offer medical Internship Opportunities at this time. Additionally, this is a hands-off sanctuary; there is no interacting with the animals.

The Sanctuary does not provide housing, transportation, or compensation for interns, so all candidates must be able to arrange their own housing, transportation, food and other support resources with family, friends or on an independent basis. Daily transportation will require an automobile, as no trains, buses, UBER, or light-rail services come anywhere near the Sanctuary.

Internship applications should be submitted at least one month before desired start date.

General Requirements
  • Interns must be at least 18 years old or completed Diploma/G.E.D
  • Interns must be enrolled in a two or four year college or university
  • Interns must maintain an overall average of at least a “C”
  • 40 hours/week is required
  • Interns are required to complete a minimum of 120 hours, this includes at least 1 month of participation, and no more than 6 months
  • A supervising professor must approve and participate in your internship if you will be receiving credit

* All interns must be active supporters www.wildanimalsanctuary.org/active-supporters-visitors

To be an Active Supporter there is a minimum donation of $120 annually. To better support the animals we suggest a minimum of a $250 annual donation which is the same as the Active Supporter requirement for the general public. If choosing the $120 option, this must be paid in full prior to your first shift. The $250 Active Supporter option can be achieved through a one-time donation, a medium or large animal adoption, or by starting a quarterly or annual pledge equivalent or exceeding $250.

Required Documents
  • Intern Application
  • Resume
  • Cover Letter detailing reasons/goals for internship and preferred start and end dates
  • 3 references or letters of recommendation (at least one from an advisor or professor if educational institution related)
  • Copy of unofficial transcripts or school records email to: Alana.Sweeney@wildanimalsanctuary.org after your application is submitted

Background Check Statement: Approval for an Internship is contingent upon successfully passing a background check prior to your Intern Orientation/Acceptance. This background check does not report to any credit bureau and no impact will be seen on the Intern applicant’s side. This process helps the Company screen for any past background experiences that pose a threat or a discrepancy to the Organization. TWAS will not be obligated to share any decision making with the applicant sharing reasons why an application has not been accepted. By applying you are authorizing The Wild Animal Sanctuary to perform this background check.

*This position is classified as an Unpaid Internship Opportunity
