Qualifications

  • Excellent organizational and work planning skills; able to prioritize and handle multiple tasks.
  • Computer proficiency in Windows-based applications and SAP.

Job description

We are seeking an Internal Dosimetry Technician who will focus on performing whole body, lung, and thyroid assay services for radiological workers at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and other Department of Energy prime contractors in Oak Ridge, TN. This position resides on the Nuclear and Radiological Measurements (NRM) Team in the Nuclear Measurements and Analytical Services (NMAS) Group of the Nuclear and Radiological Protection Division (NRPD) for the Environmental, Safety, Health, and Quality Directorate at ORNL.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Supports the ORNL radiobioassay program, focused on daily in vivo operations.
  • Schedules and performs whole body, lung, thyroid, and other in vivo radiobioassay measurements for ORNL and contractor employees.
  • Directs personnel during in vivo measurement procedures.
  • Conducts routine quality assurance activities for in vivo measurement equipment.
  • Uses the bioassay database system to schedule staff, validate results, and perform other related tasks.
  • Schedules and performs measurements of internal and external test standards.
  • Assists with maintenance of equipment, including detectors and associated electronics.
  • Assists with efficiency calibrations, troubleshooting, and repairs.
  • Performs routine facility support operations, including radioactive source control, and interfaces with ORNL facility maintenance groups as needed.
  • Organizes and maintains operational records for in vivo operations, including reports, logbooks, quality data, and facility equipment.
  • May cross-train to support other group operations, e.g., in vitro radiobioassay measurements.
  • Generates operational reports (e.g., quality control summaries and billing).

Basic Qualifications:
  • AS degree with at least 5 years of experience in a radiological field or equivalent combination of education and experience (HS diploma and 7 years of radiological experience).
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Previous experience in occupational radiation protection, external dosimetry, or instrumentation repair and calibration is desired.
  • Must have the ability to handle confidential information and materials and maintain professionalism in a demanding environment.
  • Excellent organizational and work planning skills; able to prioritize and handle multiple tasks.
  • Computer proficiency in Windows-based application software and web-based office system and software packages (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite, SAP) are required.
  • Ability to lift and/or position up to 50-lb phantoms, assist with detector and electronics installation, and physically position detector arrays.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.
Special Requirements:
  • Physical Requirements: Work involves various physical requirements and working conditions. As such, a pre-hire physical will be required after offer.
  • Visa Sponsorship: Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain an HSPD-12 PIV badge.
