Job summary

The SC Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities (BHDD) seeks an Internal Communications Manager to lead statewide internal communications strategy, ensuring every employee stays informed, connected, and aligned with BHDD's mission.

You will manage the editorial calendar, review and approve internal communications, and provide guidance on writing standards while coordinating across departments, including Human Resources and Talent.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree and relevant experience required.
  • Equivalent experience may substitute for a degree.
  • Degree in communications or related field preferred.
  • Strong writing and editing skills for broad staff audiences.
  • Knowledge of internal communications practices and channels, including approaches for non-desk employees.
  • Ability to plan and maintain a regular schedule of staff communications.
  • Ability to collaborate across departments, especially HR and Talent.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft 365 tools (Teams, SharePoint) and email or communications platforms.

This position is located at the SC Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities (BHDD), Central Office, 400 Otarre Parkway Cayce, SC 29033.

As the Internal Communications Manager, you will lead internal communications strategy and execution for BHDD's statewide workforce, ensuring every employee, regardless of role or location, stays informed, connected, and aligned with BHDD's mission.

Responsibilities for the Internal Communications Manager include:
  • Develop and manage a comprehensive internal communications plan that keeps all BHDD employees informed, engaged, and connected to the agency's mission. Own the editorial calendar for internal communications and ensure the plan is responsive to agency priorities, leadership needs, and employee experience.
  • Serve as the editorial and distribution hub for internal agency communications - reviewing, editing, and approving emails, memos, newsletters, intranet content, and other internal communications. Apply editorial discretion to ensure what goes out is accurate, appropriate, and aligned with agency standards. Manage distribution lists and ensure communications reach the right audiences through the right channels.
  • Maintain style guides, templates, and writing guidelines and ensure they are applied consistently across the agency. Provide guidance and training to staff on communications standards and tools. Provide copywriting, editing, and proofreading for agency communications including executive correspondence, reports, memos, and presentations.
  • A bachelor's degree and relevant experience.
  • Equivalent relevant professional experience may be substituted for a bachelor's degree.
  • A degree in communications or a related field.
Post hire, employees must have (KSA):
  • Strong writing and editing skills, including the ability to write in plain language for a broad staff audience.
  • Knowledge of internal communications practices and channels, including approaches for reaching non-desk employees who do not use email regularly.
  • Ability to plan and maintain a regular schedule of staff communications.
  • Skill in working across departments, particularly with Human Resources and Talent.
  • Ability to handle sensitive information with discretion and sound judgment. Familiarity with Microsoft 365 tools (Teams, SharePoint) and email or communications platforms.
