Job summary

Southwest Airlines Co. is seeking an Internal Communications Consultant to serve as a trusted partner to Leaders and Teams, shaping strategies that bring clarity to complex topics and support meaningful business outcomes.

You’ll guide plans from strategy through delivery, blending storytelling with data-driven insights to strengthen alignment, engagement, and trust across the Company. This role requires working from our Dallas, TX Headquarters during business hours, influencing messaging

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of writing, communication strategy, tactics, and tools and an understanding of how to effectively execute on them including creative ways to inform and connect via written, oral, and visual media
  • Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar including Microsoft Office or other word processing tools
  • Skilled in oral and written communication, including production of Executive-level presentations and communication materials which illustrate how communication contributes to business objectives
  • Skilled in giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and applying relevant information to communication strategy and messaging
  • Ability to demonstrate comfort and confidence with public speaking and presenting in front of senior level Leaders
  • Ability to listen, understand, and communicate ideas presented in writing and/or in speaking with others
  • Ability to influence without positional authority
  • Ability to demonstrate a strategic thought process, proactive initiative, and a sense of urgency
  • Ability to take ownership and accountability

Responsibilities

  • Serve as communications program lead and strategic communications counsel to colleagues, internal clients' Leaders, and Executives—determining appropriate tone, message, and channel to deliver clear and effective messages that align with Company and client objectives
  • Partner with departments to create communication strategies to create deeper engagement with multiple stakeholders
  • Demonstrate autonomy in the development of message and channel strategy, gathering inputs from multiple sources, obtaining and coordinating the proper approvals, and partnering with other departments or outside partners as needed to build and execute communication strategy
  • In partnership with Customer Experience & Analytics and other Communications Teams to define and measure key performance metrics, analyze data, and develop recommendations based on findings
  • Work closely with Senior Leaders across the Company to advise on communication tactics, ghostwriting, and offering constructive communication advice
  • Work in a collaborative spirit through relationship-building with internal stakeholders to ensure alignment and prioritization of their department goals and communication efforts
  • Stay current with advancements and trends in communication, specifically in the areas of mobile messaging, social and collaborative sites, and digital presence
  • Support and advise the communications strategy for internal clients during crises
  • May perform other job duties as directed by Employee's Leaders

Job Description:

Help shape the communications that connect Southwest Employees to our most important priorities. As an Internal Communications Consultant, you'll serve as a trusted communications partner to Leaders and Teams, developing strategies that bring clarity to complex topics and support meaningful business outcomes. You'll build strong relationships, influence messaging decisions, and guide communication plans from initial strategy through delivery. By combining thoughtful storytelling, data-driven insights, and an understanding of emerging communication trends, you'll strengthen alignment, engagement, and trust across the Company.

Education
  • Required: High School Diploma or GED
Experience
  • Advanced-level experience, seasoned and specialized knowledge in:
    • Leading large-scale, complex communication efforts, either from within a business organization or with a strong partnership with the business
    • Creating communication plans
    • Managing cross-functional projects
    • Managing communication during a crisis preferred

Other Qualifications
  • Must maintain a well-groomed appearance per Company appearance standards as described in established guidelines

  • Must be able to comply with Company attendance standards as described in established guidelines
  • Must be able to travel periodically as needed
  • Must be willing to work outside of 8-5 hours as needed depending on the needs of the business

Competitive market salary from $103,750 - $115,300* depending on qualifications and experience. For eligible Leadership and individual contributor roles, additional bonus opportunities are available and awarded at the discretion of the company.
