About Our Team

The Radiation Effects Research Department conducts research and development involving intense radiation environments.

All radiation effects from nuclear detonations (x rays, gamma rays, neutrons, electromagnetic pulse, etc.), natural and enhanced space environments, and in situ radiation are included.

Research is in the broad areas of radiation effects in electronics, radiation effects in materials, and research in accelerator technologies, with a primary emphasis in ensuring weapons survivability in severe radiation environments.

A major role for the department is to provide design consultation and hostile radiation qualification assessment for Sandia's nuclear weapon systems, component design, satellite programs, and new technology groups.

Research and development spans radiation effects in electronics and optoelectronics from individual devices to circuits to systems involving phenomena driven by transient radiation effects on electronics (TREE), total ionizing dose (TID), and single event effects (SEE).

Active research in advanced materials includes response of materials and components to intense X-rays encompassing phenomena such as thermal, structural, shock, and impulse responses. We also develop advanced experimental diagnostics and accelerator technology for enhancing the characterization and production of radiation environments.
