Job summary

The Shelly Company, a CRH company, is seeking a Quality Control Intern to gain exposure to multiple aspects of construction management and customer specification requirements. You will work with QC technicians and participate in testing, data entry, and reporting while adhering to safety and ethical standards.

This internship offers hands-on experience in materials testing, density determinations, and process improvements within a leading Ohio construction materials provider.

Qualifications

• Must be enrolled in an accredited college/university and working toward an Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering, Construction Management, or other related degree program.
• Ability to read English language sufficiently to read information contained in specifications, reports, manuals and regulations.
• Basic algebra, geometry, and shop math.
• Willingness to travel and work nights and weekends as required.

Responsibilities

• Learn HMA production processes and quality control methods.
• Learn quality control reporting procedures and density control.
• Assist with testing materials and calibrations in a safe, efficient manner.
• Input test results into laboratories and remote systems and communicate results to others.
• Adhere to safety requirements and company ethics in all tasks.

Position Overview

A Quality Control Intern will be given the opportunity to work with a vertically integrated company and experience multiple aspects of customer specification requirements in construction management as well as other lines of business.

Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)

The duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

Skills and Development during Internship:

• Receive detailed understanding of the HMA production processes.
• Learn Quality Control methods and reporting procedures.
• Learn entire paving process and density control.
• Work with QC Technicians to further understand smoothness determinations and IRI reporting.
• Learn how to conduct and test equipment calibrations.
• Work to understand aggregate processing and quality conformance.
• Assist with testing materials in a safe, efficient, and productive manner.
• Identify and become familiar with various mix specifications requirements.
• Test materials to determine specific requirements such as weight, gravity, temperature, thickness, and gradation of mix components.
• Communicate with other technicians regarding mix specifications and test results.
• Input test result data into computers in laboratories and remote locations.
• Communicate and assist paving personnel in adjusting processes to conform to specifications.
• Report and communicate test results ethically, adhering to the companies Ethics Policy.

• Display a professional and courteous attitude to co-workers, supervisors, and the general public at all times.
• Must be willing to travel and work away from home when required.
• Must be willing to work nights and weekends when necessary.
• Report to the assigned job site ready to begin work at the designated start time.
• Strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures as outlined in the Manual of Safety Practices and Procedures.

• Willingness to work in a team environment and assist co-workers or supervisors with other duties as required.

Education and Experience

Must be enrolled in an accredited college or university and working towards an Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering, Construction Management, or other industry related degree program.

Language Skills:

Ability to read English language sufficiently to read information contained in specifications, reports, manuals and regulations.

Mathematical Skills:

Ability to perform intermediate mathematical skills, including basic algebra, geometry, and shop math.

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

The employee must regularly lift and/or move more than 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.

Walking up to ten miles per day, occasional climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and traveling over irregular terrain. Functions also usually involve frequent sitting and standing. Performance of some tasks or operation of some equipment may require motor coordination, finger dexterity, eye-hand-foot coordination and color discrimination.

Individuals must be able to perform all essential functions, with or without reasonable accommodation, without posing a direct threat to the health safety of the individual or to others.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions and is regularly exposed to wet, humid conditions, airborne particles, and extreme heat or cold. The noise level in the work environment is frequently very loud and may require protective equipment.
