Job summary

Volvo Group in Dublin, VA is seeking an Intern in Manufacturing Engineering for Fall 2026. You will assist the Manufacturing Engineering Department with Industrial Engineering assignments and participate in lean manufacturing initiatives on the shop floor.

This student role offers structured learning, up to 30 hours per week, and a pay range of $17.00 to $46.00 per hour. You will gain exposure to real projects and career development within Volvo New River Valley Plant.

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in an Industrial Engineering program and have completed 30 semester hours prior to start.
  • Minimum GPA of 2.75.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with implementing workplace organization and standardized work at each station.
  • Apply lean manufacturing practices on the shop floor.
  • Review current labor standards and identify ways to improve labor utilization and reduce waste.
  • Participate in training and development to support team deliverables.
  • Maintain attention to detail and ensure data accuracy prior to passing it on.

The purpose of this position is to assist the Manufacturing Engineering Department with assignments specific to Industrial Engineering.

The internship role provides students with the opportunity to apply academic knowledge and skills in a manufacturing environment, and to support/promote the graduate’s career goals through interaction with Industrial Engineering professionals. Interns participate in professional activities for the Volvo New River Valley Plant by working on practical, innovative and important projects. This internship provides structured learning experiences where interns and our Manufacturing Engineering professionals work together on projects within their selected organization. The internship allows students to integrate knowledge and skills in a manner that is mutually beneficial to the student and Volvo New River Valley Plant.

Core Responsibilities
  • The position will assist with implementation of work place organization and standardized work at each station.
  • Implement lean manufacturing practices on the shop floor.
  • The position will review current labor standards and review for ways to improve labor utilization eliminating waste or non-value added work
  • Participate in training and development to support team deliverables
  • Attention to Detail: Monitoring adherence to standards and actively checking for accuracy of data received or generated before passing it on
  • Communication: listening effectively, transmitting information accurately and understandably and actively seeking feedback non-defensively
  • Flexibility: performing a wide range of tasks, responding to changes in direction and priorities, and accepting new challenges, responsibilities, and assignments
  • Dependability/Reliability: Following through on commitments, producing timely work to promote a higher standard; pitching in to get the job done
  • Strong writing, communication, and presentation skills
Minimum Education and Experience
  • Applicants must be currently enrolled and pursuing a degree in Industrial Engineering, at an accredited school and have completed 30 semester hours prior to the start of the internship
  • Students should have a minimum GPA of 2.75
  • Fall interns may work up to 30 hours per week
