Job summary

Symbotic offers internship and co‑op opportunities in its Industrial Controls team, designing and validating PLC hardware and software for automated warehouse systems.

You will work with operators and engineers to diagnose issues, develop testing plans, and support electrical design across installations, with possibilities in software tools and data rendering. A Bachelor’s degree in engineering is pursued or required, with relocation benefits for eligible students.

Qualifications

• Pursuing or completing a Bachelor's degree in engineering.
• Familiarity with PLCs, controls, industrial automation, or electro‑mechanical systems.
• Ability to read electrical circuits and an interest in motors, wiring and VFDs.
• Exposure to OO programming and C# is a plus.
• Experience with AutoCAD, Git, CI/CD, Jenkins, Redis, Docker or Kubernetes is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Assist Industrial Controls teams with design, implementation, testing and support of controls for automated warehouse systems.
• Contribute to PLC hardware and software design and troubleshooting with site operators.
• Develop and execute testing plans to validate PLC performance.

About the Opportunities

Symbotic’s Industrial Controls team designs, implements, tests, and supports the control systems that power our automated warehouse equipment. Intern opportunities in our Industrial Controls function include:

• PLC interns contribute to the design and implementation of PLC hardware and software systems, troubleshoot system issues with site operators, develop and execute testing plans, participate in code reviews, and support commissioning and site installation.
• Electrical Engineering interns support electrical design for fixed automation equipment, including adapter cells, lift cells, motors, wiring, power, and variable frequency drives (VFDs).
• Software Tools interns support software tools used for data generation, structure validation, bot playback simulation, and data rendering for commissioning, testing, and system integration engineers.

What You’ll Do

• Assist one of our Industrial Controls teams with the design, implementation, testing, and support of controls technologies for automated warehouse systems.
• Contribute to the design and implementation of PLC hardware and software systems.
• Work with site operators and engineering teams to understand and diagnose PLC system issues.
• Develop and execute testing plans to validate PLC system performance.
• Participate in code reviews and adhere to PLC programming best practices.
• Support electrical design and troubleshooting involving circuits, motors, wiring, power distribution, and variable frequency drives (VFDs).
• Assist with site installation, commissioning, implementation, and support activities for automated equipment.
• Collaborate with commissioning, testing, system integration, software, and electrical engineering teams.
• Depending on team placement, contribute to software tools for data generation, structure validation, bot playback simulation, and data rendering.

What you’ll need

• Currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in engineering required (Electrical, Controls, Automation, Mechatronics, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related engineering/technical field).
• Familiarity with programmable logic controllers (PLCs), controls, industrial automation, or electro‑mechanical systems.
• Ability to read or trace electrical circuits and an interest in motors, wiring, power systems, and VFDs.
• Familiarity with object‑oriented programming and a programming language such as C# a plus.
• Exposure to AutoCAD, source control such as Git, software testing frameworks, or CI/CD pipelines a plus.
• Experience with technologies such as Jenkins, Redis, Docker, or Kubernetes a plus for software tools opportunities.
• Strong analytical, creative problem solving, critical thinking, and organizational skills.
• Outstanding communication skills with demonstrated ability to organize and present data.

Our Environment

• Up to 10% of travel may be required.
• Employees must have a valid driver's license and the ability to drive and/or fly to client and other customer locations.
• The employee is responsible for owning a credit card and managing expenses personally to be reimbursed on a bi‑weekly basis.

The base range for this position in the posted location is $29.00 - $40.00 however, base pay offered may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The compensation package includes medical, dental, vision, disability, 401K, PTO and/or other benefits.
