Job summary

Mohawk Valley Health System in Utica, NY is seeking a Nurse Intern I to support RN staff in an Intensive Care Unit setting. You will perform select procedures, assist with patient care, and help maintain orderly units while documenting care provided.

REQUIRED: current enrollment in an accredited nursing program and completion of one semester of clinicals. PREFERRED: prior clinical experience. Pay is $18 per hour with variable shift schedules.

Qualifications

• Current nursing student enrolled in an accredited program.
• Has completed at least one semester of clinicals.
• Prefer prior hands-on clinical experience.

Responsibilities

• Carries out duties as directed by a floor RN to support patient care.
• Provides direct patient care such as bathing, toiletries, bed making, ambulation and positioning.
• Takes and records intake/output, vital signs, and weights.
• Responds to patient call lights promptly.
• Collects specimens and labels for lab analysis.
• Assists with transfers using proper body mechanics and transfer devices.
• Sets up oxygen and suction equipment; applies telemetry electrodes.
• Assists with wound care and dressing changes; prepares patients for exams and procedures.
• May perform EKGs, phlebotomy, or traction setup after training.
• May accompany patients for 1:1 observation or transport as needed.
• Transports medications safely to and from pharmacy; maintains unit cleanliness and stock.

Education

Current enrollment in an accredited Nursing Program

Completion of one semester of clinicals

Core Job Responsibilities

• - Carries out specific duties as directed by a floor RN to support patient healing and care delivery.
• - Provides direct patient care which may include bathing, oral and hair care, bed making, ambulation and positioning, toileting.
• - Takes and records patient measurements such as intake and output, vital signs, weights.
• - Answers patient call lights in a timely manner.
• - Independently performs and documents tasks such as the following in a safe, appropriate, timely manner as directed:
• Collects specimens (urine, stool, sputum), labels and sends to lab.
• - Lifts and transfers patients using proper body mechanics, patient transfer devices and techniques.
• - Sets up portable oxygen.
• - Sets up suction equipment.
• - Applies and sets up telemetry electrodes.
• - Assists with wound care and dressing changes.
• - Prepares patient and assists provider with exam and treatment procedures.
• - May perform EKGs, phlebotomy or set up traction after appropriate education and training.
• - May sit with patients requiring 1:1 observation or assist with patient transport.
• - Secures and transports medications to and from pharmacy safely.
• - Provides and documents preventative skin care as directed and documents care provided.
• - Prepares patient rooms for admission, transfers and discharges.
• - Assists with maintaining the overall cleanliness of the unit. Replenishes stock items in unit areas.
• - Responds appropriately in emergency situations. Alerts supervising RN of any abnormal findings or changes in patient conditions.
• - Performs related duties as assigned.

Education/Experience Requirements

REQUIRED:

• - Current enrollment in an accredited Nursing Program
• - Completion of one semester of clinicals.

PREFERRED:

• - Prior experience in a clinical setting
