Job summary

Principal Financial Group is seeking two Fixed Income summer interns for 2027. You may work on High Yield or split between Structured Product and Investment Grade. The internship will culminate in a final presentation on your investment recommendation.

Location: Des Moines, IA. Responsibilities include assisting traders, analysts and portfolio managers, creating financial models, analyzing investment opportunities, improving processes, and supporting sector coverage.

Qualifications

  • Pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree in a relevant field with finance coursework.
  • Completion of intermediate finance coursework by Summer 2027.
  • Strong finance, data and quantitative skills.

What You'll Do

We’re looking for two Fixed Income summer interns to join our team for summer 2027. The interns will have the opportunity to work on either High Yield or split between Structured Product and Investment Grade.

The internship will culminate in a final presentation on your investment recommendation.

What You’ll Do

  • Assist the traders, analysts and portfolio managers on an ad hoc basis
  • Create financial models and analyze investment opportunities
  • Improve, streamline, and document existing processes
  • Assist with sector coverage
  • Interact directly with company roadshows and/or Bloomberg representatives
  • Prepare investment performance commentary
  • Assist analysts in preparing commercial paper and credit reviews

Who You Are

  • Working towards a bachelor’s degree or master’s degree in accounting, finance, economics, engineering, business analytics, math, statistics, sciences (with investment coursework) or a related major
  • If undergrad, completion of intermediate level coursework in finance by the summer of 2027
  • Strong finance, data, and logical/math skills
  • Quantitative analysis experience through coursework or experience
  • Additional exposure to investment concepts through involvement in student organizations or work experiences
Skills That Will Help You Stand Out
  • 3.5 GPA or higher
  • Exposure to FactSet, Bloomberg, or similar
  • Strong Excel experience
  • The ability to interact well in verbal and written communications
  • Exceptional organizational skills
Salary Range Information

Salary ranges below reflect targeted base salaries. Non-sales positions have the opportunity to participate in a bonus program. Sales positions are eligible for sales incentives, and in some instances a bonus plan, whereby total compensation may far exceed base salary depending on individual performance. Actual compensation for all roles will be based upon geographic location, work experience, education, licensure requirements and/or skill level and will be finalized at the time of offer.

Salary Range (Non‑Exempt expressed as hourly; Exempt expressed as yearly)

$29 - $29 / hour

Internship Stipend

You will receive a lump sum stipend of $4,000. This amount is intended to support incidental expenses you may incur as part of your internship. The Company will provide a tax gross‑up on this stipend as a financial benefit, but is not intended to compensate for all tax liabilities.

This internship will be located at our corporate headquarters in Des Moines, IA.
