Job summary

BWXT's Nuclear Fuel Services in Erwin, Tennessee seeks an Environmental Safety Intern for Summer 2026 to develop safety and environmental monitoring solutions in a nuclear setting. You will review data, perform calculations, and assist in documenting procedures and reports, with hands-on sample analysis and equipment maintenance.

On-site in Erwin, TN, you must be enrolled in a technical BS program, be a U.S. citizen without dual citizenship, and be able to obtain a DOE security clearance.

Qualifications

• Must be a currently enrolled student pursuing a B.S. degree in a technical discipline such as Science, Environmental Science, Chemistry or Math.
• Requires U.S. Citizenship with no dual citizenship.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE security clearance with background checks.

Responsibilities

• Assist in developing safety and environmental monitoring solutions in a nuclear environment.
• Review analytical data for completeness and correctness and perform calculations to support data evaluation.
• Assist in preparing work plans, procedures, and reports.
• Assist in sample analyses, maintain sampling equipment, and manage sampling supplies.

Position Overview:

As an Environmental Specialist Intern you will help develop safety and environmental monitoring solutions in a nuclear environment. You will review analytical data for completeness and correctness, perform calculations and statistical analyses to assist data evaluation, assist the preparation of work plans, procedures, reports and other documentation as needed. You will also assist in sample analyses using field analytical equipment, maintain sampling equipment, and inventory of sampling supplies with assistance.

On-site in Erwin, Tennessee.

Requirement Qualifications:

• Must be a currently enrolled student pursuing a B. S. degree in a technical discipline (i.e. Science, Environmental Science, Chemistry or Math preferred).
• Requires U.S. Citizenship with (no dual citizenship)
• Ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy (DOE) security clearance which involves an extensive criminal and financial background investigation and previous employment reference verifications.

Preferred Qualifications:

• A cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Pay: $19.57- $25.59

The starting hourly rate for this position in Tennessee (US-TN) at the start of employment is expected to be between $19.57 and $25.59 per hour. The hourly rate offered is based on local job market factors and other objective business considerations. Subject to these considerations, the total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, such as a full range of medical, retirement, and/or other benefits. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided at such time the selected job candidate receives an offer of employment. If hired, the selected job candidate will be employed 'at-will,’ unless employed at a location and in a position subject to a collective bargaining agreement. The company further reserves the right to modify the hourly rate (as well as any other discretionary payment, compensation, or benefit program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, company or applicable department/team performance, and other market factors.
