Job summary

The Opportunity:

We are currently seeking an Intern – Engineering Transportation to join our Lexington, KY office.

This role is ideal for a motivated student pursuing a degree in Civil Engineering or a related discipline who is eager to gain hands‑on experience in transportation engineering. As an intern, you will work alongside experienced engineers and technical professionals while contributing to real‑world transportation and infrastructure projects that improve mobility, safety, and connectivity within the communities we serve.

Through mentorship and collaboration, you will have the opportunity to apply classroom knowledge to projects involving roadways, highways, traffic, bridges, multimodal facilities, and other transportation infrastructure. This internship provides valuable exposure to the planning, design, analysis, and construction phases of transportation projects while helping you build the technical and professional skills needed for a successful engineering career.

What You’ll Do:

As an Intern – Engineering Transportation, you will support project teams with a variety of engineering, design, and technical assignments while gaining exposure to different phases of transportation project delivery. Under the guidance of experienced engineers, you will assist with preparing plans, performing calculations, gathering and analyzing project data, and developing technical documentation.

In this role, you will collaborate with engineers, designers, planners, and other professionals across multidisciplinary teams. You may also participate in field visits and project meetings while gaining hands‑on experience with industry‑standard engineering software, design standards, and transportation engineering practices.

Key Responsibilities:

• Assist project teams with the preparation of transportation plans, exhibits, reports, calculations, and construction documents.
• Support engineers with engineering calculations, quantity estimates, data collection, and technical analyses.
• Assist with roadway, highway, traffic, bridge, multimodal, and other transportation‑related design activities.
• Conduct research and gather project data to support transportation engineering studies and reports.
• Assist with reviewing plans, specifications, design criteria, and applicable transportation standards.
• Gain experience using industry‑standard engineering and design software applicable to transportation projects.
• Participate in project meetings and collaborate with engineers, designers, planners, surveyors, and other technical professionals.
• Participate in field visits, site investigations, and construction observations as needed.
• Assist with maintaining accurate and organized project files and documentation.
• Perform other duties as assigned to support project teams.

What You’ll Bring:

• Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a related engineering discipline from an accredited university.
• Rising sophomore, junior, senior, or graduate student with an interest in transportation engineering and infrastructure design.
• Basic understanding of civil engineering principles with an interest in roadway, highway, traffic, bridge, or transportation‑related projects.
• Familiarity with MicroStation, OpenRoads Designer, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, or other engineering design software is preferred but not required.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
• Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and organizational skills.
• Strong attention to detail and willingness to learn new technical concepts and software.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
• Eagerness to learn, take initiative, and contribute in a professional engineering environment.
• Valid driver’s license and ability to travel occasionally to project sites, if needed.
