Job summary

Hussmann’s 2027 Summer Internship Program offers a Design Engineering internship that provides real-life experiences in the food retailing industry. You will work across the engineering team to support new product development during a twelve-week session in Missouri.

You will gain hands-on experience with CAD, design, and development of refrigeration system products, collaborating with mentors and leaders to learn processes and participate in the company’s innovation challenge.

Qualifications

• Currently enrolled in school pursuing a minimum of a bachelor’s degree

Responsibilities

• Assist with concept layout, design, and development using CAD software for refrigeration system products
• Learn customer needs and follow processes to develop and release products on time and high quality
• Follow processes for product releases and engineering change notices
• Suggest improvements to innovation, quality, function and cost
• Participate in studies of new and existing designs to incorporate cost-effective technology
• Utilize CAD and CFD/FEA tools for design analyses
• Develop detailed specifications, program plans, milestones, and budgets
• Communicate status to the team and network with leaders and mentors
• Tour manufacturing facilities and participate in community outreach and ideation events
• compete in the Ideation & Innovation Challenge with cross-functional teams

Overview

Hussmann's Internship Program provides meaningful, real-life experiences while working as a solutions leader in the food retailing industry. As a Design Engineering Intern in the 2027 Hussmann Summer Internship Program, you will gain experience and insight into a day in the life of an engineering professional. You will work across the engineering team to provide new product development support.

Responsibilities

• Assist with concept layout, design, and development, via 3D & 2D CAD software, of refrigeration system products, components, or services from product specifications.
• Learn our customers' needs and follow the processes required for developing and releasing the product at a high-quality level and at a given deadline.
• Learn and follow the processes used for implementation of product releases and engineering change notices.
• Suggest improvements to overall innovation, quality, function, and cost of product.
• Participate in studies of new and existing designs to incorporate new cost-effective technology to maintain a competitive edge.
• Utilize contemporary Engineering processes and tools such as Computer Aided Design (CAD), Reliability Analysis, computer simulation software for Computational Fluid Dynamics, Finite element Analysis, etc.
• Participate in developing detailed specifications, detailed program plans and work breakdown structure, milestones, major review, schedule, cost, etc.
• Follow project plans and communicate their status to the team.
• Network with senior leaders, associates, and other program interns to learn about our organization.
• Tour Hussmann's 1.6 million square foot manufacturing facility, our Global Hub for hosting customers, and the R&D Lab where we test product quality.
• Participate in community stewardship outreach, career development events, and other team-building offsite events.
• Compete in the annual Ideation & Innovation Challenge.

Throughout the twelve-week program, all Hussmann interns will divide into cross-functional teams and compete with one another for the Hussmann Ideation & Innovation Challenge. Working with Hussmann mentors and leaders, you and your team will identify a solution to a provided problem statement. At the end of the summer, you’ll present your team’s business proposal to a panel of judges, executive leaders, and the organization – and possibly create a roadmap for Hussmann’s next great innovation.

Qualifications

• Currently enrolled in school pursuing a minimum of a bachelor’s degree
• Minimum 3.0 GPA
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills

• Ability to effectively interact with all levels of the organization
• Ability to set priorities, manage multiple projects, and demonstrate strong attention to detail
• Highly motivated and eager to learn
• Strong computer skills
• Ability to relocate, if not local

Preferred

• Proficiency using 3D solid modeling CAD software (SolidEdge preferred or SolidWorks)
• Refrigeration/HVAC knowledge
• Previous internship experience in a manufacturing environment
• General understanding of refrigeration systems, thermo-dynamics, heat transfer and structural analysis principles is a plus
• Basic electrical wiring knowledge is a plus
• Sheet metal design experience is a plus

The summer internship will run from the third week of May through the first week of August. These dates may be changed to meet the needs of the student.
