Job summary

Corning Incorporated in Painted Post, NY, seeks a motivated Controls Engineering Intern to support the Digital Factory Lab. You will work with robotics, machine vision, control systems, and data-enabled manufacturing technologies in a hands-on environment.

You’ll gain experience with automation hardware, programmable controllers, and industrial networks, while contributing to training material and demonstrations for the engineering team.

Qualifications

  • Pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Robotics Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related technical discipline.
  • Demonstrated technical curiosity and a desire to learn.
  • Basic electrical and mechanical aptitude.
  • Basic programming experience in any language.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a laboratory environment.

Responsibilities

  • Support the assembly, maintenance, and organization of the Digital Factory Lab.
  • Assist with mechanical integration of conveyors, sensors, robotics, vision systems, and automation hardware.
  • Wire sensors, actuators, control panels, and communication devices under supervision.
  • Participate in programming and troubleshooting programmable controllers, robotic systems, operator interfaces, and industrial networks.
  • Design and fabricate custom components, fixtures, and sensor-mounting solutions using CAD and 3D printing.
  • Learn safe operation and application of robotic systems and industrial machinery.
  • Collaborate with project leaders to meet milestones and stage-gate objectives.
  • Document engineering activities, test results, and configurations.
  • Contribute to data collection and analysis for AI, predictive analytics, digital twins, and intelligent automation.

Role Purpose

Corning is seeking a motivated and technically curious Controls Engineering Intern to support the development and expansion of the Digital Factory Lab, an advanced automation training and demonstration platform. This internship offers hands‑on experience with modern manufacturing technologies, including industrial robotics, machine vision, intelligent conveyance systems, programmable control systems, industrial networking, and automated material handling. The Digital Factory Lab is designed not only as a hands‑on automation training platform, but also as a testbed for emerging digital manufacturing concepts, including the collection and utilization of manufacturing data to support future artificial intelligence and intelligent automation applications. As a member of the engineering team, you will work alongside experienced controls and automation engineers to help design, build, program, test, document, and demonstrate a state‑of‑the‑art training platform used to teach advanced manufacturing concepts and emerging automation technologies.

Key Responsibilities
  • Support the assembly, maintenance, and organization of the Digital Factory Lab.

  • Design and fabricate custom components, fixtures, and sensor‑mounting solutions using CAD and additive manufacturing technologies.
  • Learn the safe operation and application of robotic systems, automated conveyance equipment, and industrial machinery.
  • Collaborate with project leaders and engineers to meet project milestones and stage‑gate objectives.
  • Document engineering activities, test results, lessons learned, and system configurations.
  • Participate in projects that collect, contextualize, visualize, and analyze manufacturing data to support future applications of artificial intelligence, predictive analytics, digital twins, and intelligent automation.
  • Contribute to the development of training materials, laboratory exercises, and technical demonstrations.
  • Assist with presentations and demonstrations for engineering teams, visitors, and leadership.
  • Present project accomplishments and technical learnings at the conclusion of the internship.
Experiences/Education - Required
  • Pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Robotics Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical discipline.

  • Participation in robotics competitions, capstone projects, or similar hands‑on engineering activities.
  • Interest in advanced manufacturing, automation, digital transformation, and emerging industrial technologies.

The range for this position is $1,635.00 - $3,185.00 biweekly. Starting pay for the successful applicant is prescribed based on geographic location, nature of position, and year in school.
