Job summary

The American Heart Association in New York City offers a hands-on internship for college students within a national health nonprofit. The program runs 20 hours per week, with 1–2 days in-office in Midtown Manhattan, and pays $23.00 per hour from 1/25/27 to 5/7/27.

Responsibilities

• Assist in organizing community and culturally appropriate health initiatives.
• Support work around hypertension, nutrition insecurity, and CPR awareness.
• Assist with internal program evaluations.
• Help communicate impact of local efforts.
• Develop resources and demonstrate stories via research and interviews.
• Create and manage a volunteer database and respond to inquiries.
• Identify and develop playbooks, promotional materials and tools.
• Support planning of trainings, health fairs, and community events.
• Assist with external events and campaigns.

Students will enhance their existing skill set by learning strategies to improve health outcomes in local communities. This will be achieved by supporting clinical strategies and policy, system and environmental change opportunities across the five boroughs to prevent or manage cardiovascular diseases and stroke.

The American Heart Association’s Internship Program provides college students an opportunity for hands‑on experience in various facets for individuals interested in gaining work experience with a non‑profit, voluntary health organization.

Internship Overview:

• Time Commitment: 20 hours per week

• Complete an internship that enriches your academic and professional resume as well as enriching your personal life by making a difference in the lives of others.

Responsibilities

• Assist in organizing/implementing community and culturally appropriate health initiatives and programs throughout communities.
• Support work around community impact priority issues, including hypertension control, nutrition insecurity, community CPR bystander response, tobacco/vaping, and the implementation of Outpace CVD.
• Assist with internal program evaluations.
• Assist the community impact team in communicating the impact of local work.
• Identify impact stories for showcasing, enhance via research and interviews, and develop communication pieces for online or offline sharing.
• Create and manage a volunteer database and communications; respond to volunteer inquiries with upcoming opportunities.
• Identify, review, and develop resources that meet community health needs such as playbooks, promotional supplies and other tools.
• Explore state or local organizations that align with the Association’s priority issue areas and identify opportunities for collaboration.
• Assist with the planning and implementation of trainings and other community impact meetings as requested, including health fairs and community events as necessary.
• Support external events and campaigns, such as American Heart Month, Advocacy Day, campaign-related events, and other related activities.

Qualifications

• Candidates who are seniors or graduate students pursuing a degree in public health, community health, advocacy or other related degree program.
• Willingness to travel to and from local community events and local meetings in the 5 boroughs.
• Bilingual in Spanish is preferred, but not required.
• Excellent oral, written, and presentation communication skills.
• Ability to learn quickly and have focused attention to detail.
• Intermediate to excellent proficiency in MS Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, PowerPoint, and basic knowledge of Canva.
• Required Equipment: Reliable Wi‑Fi connection and reliable transportation.
• Minimum availability of 20 hrs/wk, M-F between the hours of 9am-5pm.
• Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship, now or in the future. For any roles working remotely, the work must also be performed inside the United States, not in a foreign country.
