Job description

Who We Are

BioMarin is a global biotechnology company that relentlessly pursues bold science to translate genetic discoveries into new medicines that advance the future of human health. Since our founding in 1997, we have applied our scientific expertise in understanding the underlying causes of genetic conditions to create transformative medicines, using a number of treatment modalities. Using our unparalleled expertise in genetics and molecular biology, we develop medicines for patients with significant unmet medical need. We enlist the best of the best – people with the right technical expertise and a relentless drive to solve real problems – and create an environment that empowers our teams to pursue bold, innovative science. With this distinctive approach to drug discovery, we’ve produced a diverse pipeline of commercial, clinical and pre‑clinical candidates that have well‑understood biology and provide an opportunity to be first‑to‑market or offer a substantial benefit over existing therapeutic options.

About Technical Operations

BioMarin’s Technical Operations group is responsible for creating our drugs for use in clinical trials and for scaling production of those drugs for the commercial market. These engineers, technicians, scientists and support staff build and maintain BioMarin’s cutting‑edge manufacturing processes and sites, provide quality assurance and quality control to ensure we meet regulatory standards, and procure the needed goods and services to support manufacturing and coordinate the worldwide movement of our drugs to patients.

SUMMARY

The BioMarin Summer Internship Program will enable students to gain valuable experience and knowledge of the processes and systems within BioMarin, while gaining an insight into the pharmaceutical/biotech industry. Over the course of 10–12 weeks our interns gain industry experience while working alongside our talented team on meaningful projects.

JOB DESCRIPTION/PROJECT

Analytical Services & Process Analytics (AS/PA) supports BioMarin’s commercial and clinical manufacturing programs by coordinating analytical readiness, improving operational efficiency, maintaining data‑visibility tools, and driving process improvements across QC, Manufacturing, and Technical Development. AS/PA partners closely with Analytical Sciences in developing, validating, transferring, and troubleshooting analytical methods for therapeutic programs—including gene therapy and enzyme replacement—through all phases of CMC development. This work includes analytical method execution, supporting regulatory documentation, ensuring product quality attributes, and contributing to training for global QC and partner testing labs. This integrated partnership enables efficient, high‑quality analytical execution and seamless cross‑functional alignment across BioMarin’s development and manufacturing network, providing interns with a unique opportunity to contribute to impactful, real‑world analytical and operational initiatives.

Core Areas of Contribution
  • Lab Performance Dashboard & Data Analysis – Supporting the development or refinement of tools that help track laboratory performance trends, visualize key metrics, and strengthen data‑driven decision making.
  • Workflow Mapping & Process Documentation – Helping to document and clarify key laboratory and analytical workflows to improve consistency, onboarding, and cross‑functional alignment.

  • Interview team members to understand workflows and process steps.
  • Create clear, visual documentation such as process maps or workflow diagrams.
  • Participate in lab organization, planning, and readiness activities.

  • Present updates and summary findings to the team at the end of the internship.
Required Skills
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to document processes clearly.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.
Desired Skills
  • Experience with dashboards or data visualization tools (Power BI, Tableau, or similar).
  • Interest in analytical laboratory operations or biopharma processes.
  • Familiarity with workflow or process mapping tools (Visio, Lucidchart, Miro).
Qualifications/Eligibility
  • Student currently pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree in a relevant scientific or technical field (Biochemistry, Chemistry, Bioengineering, Industrial Engineering, Data Science, etc.).
  • Must be available to work full time, 40 hours a week.
  • Must be currently enrolled as a full‑time student at an accredited U.S.‑based university or college and enrolled in the fall term after the completion of the internship OR have graduated within one year of the start of the program.
