The City of Arlington is seeking a Safe Routes to School intern to assist the Transportation Department Planning and Programming division with data collection, analysis, and community engagement for the Safe Routes to School Master Plan and Demonstration Project. SALARY $16.91 - $21.14
JOB SUMMARY

The Safe Routes to School intern will work directly with the City of Arlington Transportation Department Planning and Programming division to support the City’s federally funded Safe Routes to School Master Plan and Demonstration Project. The project is expected to run from Fall 2026 through Spring 2028, and it will result in the development of a Master Plan to improve safety for students traveling to and from public school campuses in Arlington, as well as roadway safety demonstration projects at two school campuses. The intern will participate in existing conditions data collection, data analysis, public engagement with schools and neighbors, and safety demonstration projects.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Participate in roadway safety existing conditions analysis.
  • Review and analyze safety improvement recommendations.
  • Assist with public engagement activities, including in-person meetings, online forums, and surveys.
  • Create presentations and informational materials to share with internal and external stakeholders for the project.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required
  • Knowledge of office and administrative practices and procedures.
  • Skill in using PC Software including current Microsoft Office Suite of applications.
  • Skill in communicating professionally and tactfully with other city employees and the public by oral and written means.
  • Skill with organization and attention to detail.
  • Ability to exercise discretion and independent judgment utilizing knowledge of the organization's policies.
  • Ability to review written material for accuracy.
  • Ability to work independently under general instructions.
  • Ability to perform a variety of physical skills including but not limited to filing, pulling, seeing, sorting, squatting, standing, stooping, twisting body, typing, walking, and writing.
  • Ability to operate a variety of office equipment including but not limited to PC, telephone, calculator, scanner, and copier.
  • Ability to prioritize deadlines and tasks.
  • Ability to learn new systems and procedures quickly.
  • Ability to plan, organize, monitor, and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to accomplish unit objectives.
  • Ability to research and analyze information to identify trends and patterns.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and work with sensitive information.

Individual must be able to schedule 10 to 20 hours a week during normal working hours.
