Job summary

Cal Poly Associated Students, Inc. in Vallejo, CA is seeking an Intermittent Lifeguard to supervise the PEAC Pool and pool area during recreational swimming hours and fitness and instructional programs.

The role includes opening/closing the pool, maintaining statistics, and ensuring a safe environment for all participants. Requirements include current American Red Cross Lifeguarding with CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and First Aid, EMT or Title 22 First Aid preferred, and prior lifeguard

Qualifications

• Current Red Cross lifeguard certification with CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and First Aid.
• Title 22 First Aid or EMT certification preferred.
• Previous lifeguard experience preferred.

Responsibilities

• Secure pool facilities upon opening and closing.
• Maintain daily usage and pool chemical statistics.
• Report equipment, supplies, safety, and maintenance needs.
• Prepare pool facilities for scheduled activities.
• Ensure a safe environment for all participants.
• Prepare incident and injury reports as needed.
• Maintain familiarity with evacuation plans for work area.
• Attend mandatory meetings, trainings, and In-Service sessions.
• Provide quality customer service for staff and customers.
• Maintain awareness of safety concerns and risk management.
• Maintain working relationships with staff and coworkers.
• Adhere to ASI policies and procedures.
• Commit to professional development, leadership, and teamwork.

Definition & Purpose

Under the supervision of the Assistant Director—Recreational Programs and Facility Operations, the Intermittent Lifeguard is responsible for the supervision of PEAC Pool and pool area during recreational swimming hours and fitness and instructional program hours. General responsibilities are to ensure that a safe and enjoyable environment is maintained. Lifeguards are also responsible for opening and securing pool facilities. This position is based at the Cal Poly Maritime Academy on the Cal Poly Solano Campus in Vallejo, CA.

Educational Requirements & Qualifying Experience

• Current American Red Cross certification in Lifeguarding with CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and First Aid (or equivalent) is required.
• Title 22 First Aid or EMT certification is preferred.
• Previous lifeguard experience preferred.
• Ability to be highly organized and have good planning skills.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to work with a wide range of populations.
• Ability to be flexible and adapt to change.
• Ability to perform detailed work with accuracy.
• Ability to work in a team setting or independently, as the situation requires.
• Ability to respond to and follow all appropriate emergency procedures.

Other Duties & Responsibilities

• The person holding this position is considered a “mandated reporter” under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in ASI policy as a condition of their employment.
• Other duties as assigned.

Background Check

Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment. ASI will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current ASI employee who was conditionally offered the position.

Period of Employment

Employment with this organization is of an “at will” nature, which means that the employee may resign at any time and ASI may discharge the employee at any time with or without cause.

Compensation & Hours

• Hourly Pay Rate: $17.40 per hour
• Hourly Pay Range: $17.40 per hour – $17.40 per hour

• Intermittent employees may not work more than 1,000 hours during any fiscal year (7/1-6/30) and are hired on an "as needed" basis only
