Job summary

Job description

WSP is currently seeking an Intermediate Traffic Design Engineer, for our established and growing North Carolina Traffic practice!

This position can sit out of our Charlotte or Raleigh, NC office.

This Opportunity

The successful candidate should have developed technical skills using OpenRoad Designer (ODR), MicroStation GeoPak, or AutoCad to develop design plans and specifications for transportation or electrical systems. Specialized experience in the design of traffic signals, communications, intelligent transportation systems, lighting systems, or roadway systems, are a plus. Other tasks may include field analysis of traffic systems, traffic signal timing, pavement marking analysis and design, and photometric analysis for lighting design.

Your Impact
  • Collect, compile, and analyze data from the physical work site, surveys, blueprints, GIS data, maps, technical data, and other matrices for project development, design, and construction.
  • Perform professional traffic engineering work and conduct investigations and inspections of proposed and existing site conditions, roadways, intersections, signage, signals, pavement markings, and transportation corridors to determine conformance with applicable rules, standards, and construction or operating permits.
  • Develop and design innovative concepts for strategic intersection and corridor improvements that require coordination with authorities, sub-consultants, and clients.
  • Design traffic signals and communication networks to provide improvements to facilitate real time corridor operations.
  • Develop or incorporate concept development, design requirements, and operating strategies to account for the safety and functionality of end-users, transportation vehicles/systems, and incorporate future-ready solutions with traffic engineering design standards.
  • Work as an individual or as part of a cross-functional team of engineers, planners, and scientific professionals to execute project work on multiple concurrent projects, assist with laying out roadways, establishing reference points/elevations/grades to guide construction, calculating costs and quantities of material/equipment/labor, and ensuring project work conforms with specifications, permit applications, compliance documentation, and regulatory and technical analysis memos.
  • Verify the characteristics of a site, provide technical assistance on signal system design, monitoring and control, and operations analysis to ensure roadways are designed in a safe and efficient way.
  • Maintain quality control standards and procedures for accurate and precise measurements, statistical analysis, and reporting.
  • Assist with development and scoping of medium-sized projects.
  • Comply with regulatory requirements pertaining to the data integrity, documentation, procedures, training, monitoring systems, and record compliance and retention.
  • Interact with regulatory agencies, subcontractors, and clients in a confident and professional manner.
  • Remain current in latest traffic engineering techniques and practices.
  • Work collaboratively with other engineers, planners, scientific professionals, and DOT authorities on Federal, State, regional, and locally funded road and transportation improvement and development projects.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Who You Are
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil or Electrical Engineering, or closely related discipline.
  • 1 to 3 years of relevant post education experience in engineering and technical design experience.
  • Engineer in Training Certification of the ability to acquire within 6 months.
  • Prior demonstrated knowledge and experience with DOT advisory circulars and procedures.
  • Ability to make technical computations and calculations involving the application of engineering principles, understanding plans and specifications and making factual comparisons to the appropriate regulations.
  • Ability to plan and conduct inspections and investigations on various aspects of the construction and design of transportation corridors, applying applicable regulations and policies.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.
  • Highly capable self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
  • Ability to work independently and provide guidance and leadership to junior team or project members, with strict adherence to QA/QC.
  • Developed critical thinking and problem-solving skills required to apply technical knowledge to reach conclusions from testing results, data collation, statistical analysis and arriving at the most effective, economical, and logical solution.
  • Ability to assertively direct others in the field such as subcontractors and others to consistently complete tasks safely and efficiently.
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
  • Ability to work schedules in alignment with project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
  • Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Proficiency with technical writing, Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, Microstation, or similar software, technology, math principles, predictive models, spreadsheets, and tools.
  • Experience with traffic design and construction management; including project involvement in signing and pavement marking, signalization, and lighting.
