Job summary

SMRT Architects & Engineers in Portland, ME seeks an Interior Designer I to lead interior design efforts across all project phases, from programming through construction, ensuring design integrity and regulatory compliance.

The role supports senior designers, coordinates with architects and engineers, and participates in client meetings to advance high‑performing environments aligned with client goals.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Interior Design or Interior Architecture from a CIDA‑accredited program.
  • Associate degree or certificate with at least 2 years of commercial interior design experience.
  • Technical knowledge of interior construction, codes, and documentation.
  • Proficiency in Revit and AutoCAD; skills with Bluebeam, SketchUp, Lumion, and Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Strong communication, organization, and leadership skills.

Responsibilities

  • Supports the development of interior design solutions by assisting senior designers and architects with schematic layouts, finish selections, and documentation, while learning to apply SMRT standards and industry best practices.
  • Contributes to project execution through mark‑up revisions, renderings, and presentation materials.
  • Assist in maintaining resource libraries, and coordinating with vendors.
  • Build foundational knowledge of interior design principles, construction codes, and client engagement through active participation in design meetings, product research, and professional development activities
  • Coordinate closely with architectural teams, engineers, consultants, and vendors
  • Participate in client meetings
  • Conduct site visits to verify field conditions and evaluate design implementation
  • Builds skills around sustainable design principles and support LEED, WELL, or similar initiatives
  • Stay current with design trends, materials, and technologies while maintaining required continuing education

Are you ready to lead interior design projects and elevate design excellence? At SMRT, our interior designers play a critical role in shaping high-performing environments that align design vision, technical rigor, and client goals. As an Interior Designer I, you’ll support the development of design and execution of interior environments across all phases of a project—from early programming through construction—while maintaining design integrity, technical quality, and regulatory compliance.

This role is ideal for a designer ready to start to take ownership of complex projects, and contribute to the continued advancement of SMRT’s interiors practice.
