From our four regionally located offices in North Carolina, Virginia, Kentucky, and Pennsylvania, SFCS provides specialized architecture, engineering, interior design, and planning services for senior living, education, healthcare, and government clients nationwide.

We are currently seeking an experienced Interior Designer to join our team. This mid-level position is ideal for a well-rounded designer who is ready to work with a high degree of independence, take ownership of significant portions of projects, and serve as a knowledgeable resource and mentor to junior team members.

The ideal candidate will bring a strong combination of creativity, technical knowledge, organization, and professional judgment. Experience in senior living design is strongly preferred, although candidates with relevant experience in healthcare, hospitality, multifamily, commercial, institutional, or other complex project types are encouraged to apply.

What You'll Do
Design & Project Execution
  • Develop thoughtful, creative design solutions that respond to client goals, program requirements, budgets, schedules, and the overall project vision.
  • Independently develop and execute interior design work through multiple phases of a project with minimal supervision.
  • Participate in programming, space planning, conceptual and schematic design, design development, construction documentation, and construction administration.
  • Lead and/or contribute to the selection and documentation of interior finishes, materials, fixtures, furnishings, and equipment.
  • Prepare accurate and coordinated drawings, specifications, finish schedules, presentations, and other project documentation.
  • Support FF&E selection, specification, procurement, installation, and coordination as required by the project.
  • Apply knowledge of applicable codes, accessibility requirements, material performance, and industry standards throughout the design process.
Project Coordination & Client Engagement
  • Work closely with Project Managers, Project Architects, consultants, and other disciplines to ensure interior design solutions are fully coordinated with the overall project.
  • Manage assigned responsibilities and deliverables within established project schedules and budgets, proactively communicating potential challenges or changes.
  • Participate confidently in client meetings, presentations, and design discussions, effectively communicating design concepts and recommendations.
  • Build positive working relationships with clients, consultants, vendors, and internal team members.
  • Participate in site visits, field observations, punch lists, and other construction administration activities as needed.
Mentorship & Team Collaboration
  • Serve as a knowledgeable and approachable resource for junior designers, sharing technical knowledge, design experience, and best practices.
  • Provide guidance and feedback on drawings, documentation, materials, and design development while helping junior team members strengthen their skills and professional judgment.
  • Collaborate effectively within multidisciplinary project teams while also being comfortable working independently and taking initiative.
  • Contribute to a positive, supportive team environment and model the quality, professionalism, accountability, and collaboration expected at SFCS.
Firm & Professional Engagement
  • Stay current on interior design trends, products, materials, technologies, codes, and industry best practices.
  • Participate in internal design discussions, knowledge sharing, and other opportunities that contribute to continued design excellence across the firm.
  • Support marketing and business development efforts through project interviews, presentations, proposals, or other activities as appropriate.
  • Represent SFCS professionally with clients, industry partners, vendors, and the broader community.
What We're Looking For
  • Bachelor's or master's degree in Interior Design or a related field from an accredited college or university.
  • Approximately 8+ years of relevant professional interior design experience, with demonstrated progression in responsibility and independence.
  • NCIDQ Certification required.
  • Senior living experience is strongly preferred; experience in healthcare, hospitality, multifamily, commercial, institutional, higher education, or other relevant project types will also be considered.
  • Experience with renovation and/or occupied projects is a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently develop and execute design work with minimal supervision.
  • Strong understanding of interior design documentation, materials, finishes, FF&E, detailing, specifications, and construction administration.
  • Ability to coordinate effectively across architecture, engineering, interior design, consultants, and vendors.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills with the ability to balance multiple priorities and meet project deadlines.
  • Strong written, verbal, visual, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to provide constructive guidance and mentorship to less-experienced team members.
  • Proficiency in Revit and working knowledge of SketchUp and/or AutoCAD. Experience with Newforma, Enscape, Lumion, or similar visualization/project-management tools is a plus.
