Interim Director, Quality and Risk Management

Reports to: Chief Operating Officer

Duration: 3 Months (Hybrid Working)

Location: Southeastern Massachusetts

Our client is a multi-site behavioral healthcare organization serving communities across southeastern Massachusetts. The organization is seeking an experienced healthcare quality leader to provide strategic and operational leadership across quality improvement, performance management, accreditation readiness, compliance monitoring, and medical records operations. This opportunity is confidential and has arisen following the departure of a successful interim leader who accepted a permanent position closer to home.

The Opportunity

Reporting directly to the Chief Operating Officer, the Director of Quality and Risk Management will play a critical leadership role in advancing organizational quality initiatives, performance improvement efforts, regulatory readiness, and data-driven decision making. The successful candidate will lead the organization's quality improvement framework while partnering closely with executive, clinical, and operational leadership teams to improve outcomes, strengthen compliance, and support operational excellence.

This individual will oversee quality and performance improvement programs, accreditation readiness activities, organizational monitoring and reporting, and the Medical Records function. The role also includes leadership of a team consisting of Medical Records Clerks, a Quality Administrator, and a Business Analyst. The position is responsible for leading quality improvement initiatives, supporting regulatory compliance, overseeing audits and tracers, conducting chart reviews, leveraging data analytics, and supervising Medical Records operations.

Key Priorities

• Lead enterprise-wide quality and performance improvement initiatives.
• Develop and manage systems that support continuous quality improvement and operational excellence.
• Analyze clinical and operational data to monitor outcomes, identify trends, and improve key performance indicators.
• Partner with clinical and operational leaders to implement sustainable improvement strategies.
• Support organizational readiness for audits, licensure reviews, accreditation surveys, and regulatory inspections.
• Conduct tracers, chart reviews, and quality monitoring activities while driving corrective action initiatives.
• Oversee Medical Records operations, documentation integrity, chart quality, timeliness, and compliance standards.
• Strengthen quality management systems and promote a culture of continuous improvement throughout the organization.
• Lead and develop a team of four direct reports.
• Serve as a key advisor to leadership on quality, compliance, accreditation, and operational performance matters.

Ideal Candidate Profile

• Director-level healthcare quality leadership experience within a healthcare setting.
• Behavioral health experience is strongly preferred.
• Demonstrated success leading quality improvement and performance improvement initiatives.
• Experience supporting Joint Commission accreditation and regulatory readiness activities.
• Knowledge of medical records operations, documentation standards, and compliance requirements.
• Experience leveraging data analytics and reporting to drive organizational performance.
• Strong leadership, stakeholder management, and team development capabilities.
• Proven ability to partner effectively with executive, clinical, and operational leadership teams.

Education & Experience

• Master's degree in healthcare administration, Public Health, Nursing, or a related healthcare discipline preferred.
• Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality (CPHQ) and/or Certified Professional in Healthcare Risk Management (CPHRM) designation preferred, or willingness to obtain certification within 12 months of hire.
• Minimum 5-7 years of progressive healthcare leadership experience in quality management, compliance, performance improvement, or related functions.
• Experience in operations management, direct patient care environments, program evaluation, and process improvement initiatives.
• Proficiency with Electronic Health Records (EHR/EMR), Power BI, and Microsoft 365 applications.
• Exceptional analytical, presentation, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills.
• Membership in ASHRM or a local ASHRM chapter is considered an asset.
