Job summary

AES Corporation is seeking an Interconnection Engineer (CAISO) to advance interconnection activities across multiple US markets. You will help progress projects through CAISO processes and work with the Development Team to optimize strategies and siting.

The role requires a BS in Power Systems and 2–5 years in energy development or transmission planning, with familiarity in power flow analyses and interconnection procedures. Remote-friendly with nationwide opportunities.

Qualifications

  • BS in Electrical Engineering with emphasis in Power Systems.
  • 2–5 years in renewable or traditional energy development, utility generation, or transmission planning.
  • Experience at an Electric Utility or consultants in the listed footprints preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Strategically analyze interconnection procedures, queue and transmission systems for greenfield siting.
  • Support CAISO Interconnection (IC) Regional Lead through the process and cross‑functional team work.
  • Monitor required system upgrades and identify mitigation within the tariff.
  • Support greenfield development including interconnection packages and viability feedback.
  • Review utility study reports and track results through the interconnection process.
  • Assist with negotiating and executing interconnection and engineering/Procurement agreements.
  • Help deliver transmission owner schedules integrated into project plans.

The Grid & Growth group is responsible for supporting siting and interconnecting the AES Renewables & Power portfolio to transmission systems across the United States. The group consists of: Growth Strategy team, Interconnection team, and the Transmission Strategy team.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • strategic analysis of the interconnection procedures, queue and transmission system in a given RTO/ISO to formulate and steer greenfield project siting, and to then prepare and manage interconnection requests through to an Interconnection Agreement with the most favorable terms possible.
  • The Interconnection Project Engineer supports the CAISO Interconnection (IC) Regional Lead on progressing projects through the interconnection process and working cross functionally with the broader Development Team to optimize the position throughout the development lifecycle.
  • Additional responsibilities include monitoring the progress of required system upgrades and identifying creative mitigation solutions when needed within the applicable open access transmission tariff.
  • Support greenfield development: review transmission system analysis, identify interconnection agencies and procedures, support preparation and filing of interconnection requests including supporting internal and external parties on preparation of technical materials, provide viability feedback to the CAISO IX Regional Lead and other internal stakeholders to support any financial and project approvals needed.
  • Interconnection study process: support the review and analysis of utility study reports; tracking and reporting results throughout process; support negotiation and execution of interconnection agreements and engineering and procurement agreements.
  • Implementation of portfolio projects: assist internal groups to complete deliverables required by transmission owners to construct interconnection facilities including integrating schedules of Transmission Owner into project construction schedule.
  • Support due diligence efforts and flag potential issues for review by the CAISO IX Lead.
PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERTISE
  • Familiarity with reviewing and preferably running power flow models.
  • Knowledge of System Impact Studies (SIS) and other interconnection studies of transmission level renewable energy generating facilities with: CAISO, PG&E, SCE, SDG&E, SMUD.
  • Secondary markets to include: PAC, APS, SRP, TEP, PNM, Tri‑state, Xcel, WAPA.
  • Understanding of electrical diagrams, preliminary site plans, and preparation of interconnection request packages for submittal.
  • Awareness of transmission systems and transmission expansion plans in US.
  • Knowledge of Open Access Transmission Tariffs and Generator Interconnection Procedures.
  • Understanding on reports published by Transmission Owners and Independent System operator.
  • Understanding of Interconnection and Transmission Agreements and Contracts.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • BS in Electrical Engineering with emphasis in Power Systems or related field.
  • 2-5 years work history in renewable or traditional energy development, utility generation development, or transmission planning.
  • Previous employment or experience working at an Electric Utility, or consultants providing services within the listed footprints is strongly preferred.

The expected salary for this position, at commencement of employment, is between $94,000 and $112,625/year; however, base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job‑related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position also includes annual bonus. The benefits offered for this position are: medical, dental, and vision coverage, life insurance, 401(k) eligibility, and paid time off (including vacation, sick leave time, and parental leave). Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if a candidate receives an offer of employment. If hired, employee will be in an “at-will position” and the Company reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment or compensation program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, Company or individual department/team performance, and market factors.
