Job summary

UK Parliament is seeking an entry‑level Interaction Designer within the Digital Delivery Directorate to deliver designs informed by customer needs. You will run tests with users and iterate based on findings to ensure tasks are completed effectively.

Collaborating with researchers, product managers, and developers in a cross‑functional, agile environment, you will champion accessibility and evidence‑led decision making while growing your core assurance knowledge.

Job description

The User Experience team, which sits within the Digital Delivery Directorate, is made up of user researchers, performance analysts, service designers, interaction designers, and product managers. We collaborate with teams across UK Parliament to help them understand customers, make evidence-led decisions and design experiences and journeys that further UK Parliament's purpose and meet the needs and expectations of customers and employees - no matter the context or channel. The Customer Experience Design Team works alongside other digital and delivery professions such as programme and project managers, change managers, business analysts, content designers, developers, data experts and technologists. The Interaction Design team works in collaboration with research, design, delivery, and technology professions, alongside stakeholders to deliver customer focussed design solutions for digital projects, products, and services. This includes the production of design principles, standards, and guidance, and reusable UI/UX solutions that follow best practice, meet accessibility standards and are consistent with the UK Parliament brand. You'll be part of the Information Security team supporting evidence led information security assurance and supply chain risk activity. You will support how Parliament gathers and validates evidence, monitors supplier security posture, and makes clear, risk-based decisions about third party services. As an entry-level role, you will be supported to learn core assurance concepts, develop confidence using third party risk management tooling, and contribute to the continuous improvement of how we manage supplier assurance and track risks over time. As an Interaction Designer you will deliver designs that are informed by customer needs, organisational goals, and the technical landscape. You'll use insights from testing and research to iterate and improve design solutions, ensuring users can complete tasks and goals effectively. You will champion accessibility and inclusion and communicate the role of interaction design in achieving these goals. You'll be comfortable explaining the value of user-centred design, helping to embed a culture of evidence-led decision making in the teams you work with.

Key Responsibilities

• Take a user centred approach to the delivery of UI/UX work for products and services, ensuring customer insight, user research and analytics inform design solutions.
• Use evidence to rationalise design decisions, challenge assumptions, engage and influence delivery teams and stakeholders.
• Design collaboratively and in the open, engaging your whole team with the design process and adapting if necessary.
• Create rapid prototypes to validate design concepts with stakeholders and through testing with customers.
• Set the design direction and embed iterative design methods and approaches that support effective ways of working and collaboration within your teams, including in agile settings.

Qualifications & Experience

• You are experienced in user-centred design and understand how to use customer insight from qualitative and quantitative research to inform evidence-led design decisions. Skilled at creating prototypes to validate designs and able to choose appropriate methods to test your assumptions with users.
• Have strong UX/UI skills, and experience using and contributing to design systems, making sure that your designs are reusable and consistent. Understand the importance of standards and able to produce inclusive designs that are compliant and meet accessibility and legal requirements.
• Have experience in multi-disciplinary ways of working, collaborating with user-centred design and delivery professions (e.g. product, service design, brand, content design, user research, analysts, and technical colleagues) throughout the design process. You are effective at facilitating co-creation, gathering feedback, and managing conflicting perspectives, whilst upholding the values of equality, diversity, and inclusion, to ensure business goals and requirements are understood and inform design decisions.
• You have strong communication skills and engage stakeholders at the right time, explaining the rationale behind decisions, to bring them along throughout the design process. You advocate for and build understanding of user-centred design and know how to influence stakeholders by showing the value of delivering products and services using an evidence-led approach.
• Have experience working in agile, including awareness of tools and methodologies and how to use them. You use your understanding of the bigger picture to deliver designs that work within and challenge constraints (e.g. technical and business) where appropriate and can communicate and help resolve issues and blockers.
• the ability to pass security clearance, backed by the right to work in the UK.

About the Digital Delivery Team

The Digital Delivery team is a new function in the Parliamentary Digital Service, bringing together the capabilities needed from across PDS to form lean, collaborative, multi-disciplinary teams that manage the full lifecycle of our products.
