Job description

Property & Casualty Insurance | Legal, Regulatory & Business Operations

A well-established and rapidly expanding Property & Casualty insurance organization is adding a senior legal professional to support the company’s insurance operations, regulatory obligations, and commercial activities. This is an in-house, business-facing position rather than a traditional litigation role. The ideal candidate combines legal expertise with a strong understanding of how insurance businesses operate in practice, from the placement and servicing of coverage to regulatory requirements, contracts, financial transactions, and day-to-day operational processes.

Reporting to the Deputy General Counsel, this individual will serve as a senior resource to the legal team while partnering closely with leaders across operations, compliance, finance, underwriting, claims, and other areas of the organization. The position offers broad visibility into the business and the opportunity to grow alongside an organization that continues to expand its insurance platform.

Hybrid 2-3 days/week in New Jersey, Midtown Manhattan or Long Island
What You’ll Do
  • Provide day-to-day legal and regulatory guidance related to the placement, administration, and servicing of P&C insurance business.
  • Advise business leaders regarding applicable insurance laws, licensing requirements, regulatory standards, and compliance obligations.
  • Review operational processes and insurance documentation to identify potential regulatory, procedural, and contractual risks.
  • Advise on the movement and administration of insurance premiums and other funds, including related operational and regulatory considerations.
  • Support E&S and surplus lines activities, including regulatory filings, premium tax matters, and other associated requirements.
  • Draft, review, interpret, and negotiate a variety of insurance and commercial agreements, including carrier, producer, vendor, and business-partner contracts.
  • Partner with underwriting, claims, finance, compliance, and operations teams to address legal and regulatory questions arising throughout the insurance lifecycle.
  • Assess the legal and regulatory implications of new products, markets, processes, and business initiatives.
  • Help the business identify practical ways to mitigate compliance and operational risk while maintaining commercial objectives.
  • Participate in regulatory examinations, internal audits, compliance reviews, and responses to regulatory inquiries as needed.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to senior stakeholders on legal matters affecting insurance operations and revenue-generating activities.
  • Provide support across both Property & Casualty and employee benefits, with the primary focus being P&C.
Qualifications
  • JD required with substantial experience working within the insurance industry.
  • Strong knowledge of Property & Casualty insurance operations and processes.
  • Experience within an insurance carrier, brokerage, MGA/MGU, or comparable insurance business.
  • Working knowledge of insurance regulation, licensing, compliance, underwriting, claims, contracts, and operational processes.
  • Understanding of how insurance is placed, administered, serviced, and financially managed.
  • Experience with E&S / surplus lines requirements, filings, premium taxes, and related regulatory matters.
  • Ability to evaluate insurance operations from both a legal/compliance and business perspective.
  • Demonstrated experience reviewing and negotiating commercial and insurance-related agreements.
  • Strong business judgment with the ability to turn complex legal or regulatory requirements into clear, practical recommendations.
  • Comfortable working directly with senior leadership and cross-functional business teams.
  • Ability and interest to take on increasing responsibility as the organization continues to scale.
Ideal Background

This position is best suited for an attorney who has developed meaningful experience inside the insurance industry and understands the operational side of the business. Relevant backgrounds could include insurance legal, regulatory, compliance, brokerage operations, underwriting, MGA/MGU, carrier, or other insurance-focused environments. The exact title or career path is less important than the candidate’s ability to understand and advise on the practical mechanics of an insurance organization.

This is not a fit for an attorney whose background is primarily law-firm litigation. The organization is seeking someone who has been close to the actual operation of an insurance business and can function as a practical business partner, not solely as outside-style legal counsel.
