Job summary

Gem Plumbing & Heating is seeking a Mechanical Insulator to apply insulation to HVAC and plumbing systems on commercial and industrial construction projects. You will measure, cut, fit, and secure insulation materials while following project specs, manufacturer recommendations, and safety standards.

Ideal candidates have 3+ years of insulation experience, strong blueprint-reading skills, and a commitment to quality workmanship. Valid driver’s license required; pipefitter license is a plus.

Qualifications

  • 3+ years mechanical insulation experience on commercial or industrial construction projects.
  • Experience applying insulation to HVAC piping, plumbing piping, ductwork, and mechanical equipment.
  • Knowledge of insulation materials, vapor barriers, protective jacketing, and installation practices.
  • Ability to read blueprints, specifications, and insulation schedules.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
  • Pipefitter license is a plus, but not required.
  • Valid driver’s license required.

Responsibilities

  • Apply mechanical insulation to HVAC piping, plumbing piping, ductwork, and mechanical equipment on commercial and industrial construction projects.
  • Measure, cut, fit, and secure insulation materials per project specs and industry standards.
  • Apply vapor barriers, protective jacketing, and finishing materials for durability and appearance.
  • Insulate valves, fittings, flanges, elbows, and other components using approved methods.
  • Read and interpret drawings, specs, and insulation schedules.
  • Coordinate daily work with foreman, project management, and other trades.
  • Communicate material needs, field conditions, delays, or installation issues to foreman or project manager.
  • Follow OSHA and site safety policies; maintain clean, safe work area.
  • Perform quality checks and correct deficiencies as needed.
  • Document time and material usage accurately.
  • Safely operate hand/power tools, ladders, scaffolding, and equipment required for insulation work.

Job description

The Mechanical Insulator is responsible for applying mechanical insulation systems to HVAC piping, plumbing piping, ductwork, and mechanical equipment on commercial and industrial construction projects. This position works closely with project teams to ensure insulation systems are completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with project specifications, applicable codes, manufacturer recommendations, and company quality standards.

All essential job functions are to adhere to "The Company" standards.

  • Apply mechanical insulation to HVAC piping, plumbing piping, ductwork, and mechanical equipment on commercial and industrial construction projects.
  • Measure, cut, fit, and secure insulation materials in accordance with project specifications, manufacturer recommendations, and industry standards.
  • Apply vapor barriers, protective jacketing, and finishing materials to ensure proper system performance, durability, and appearance.
  • Insulate valves, fittings, flanges, elbows, and other mechanical system components using approved insulation methods and materials.
  • Read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, insulation schedules, and project details.
  • Verify that insulation thicknesses, materials, and finishes meet project requirements and quality standards.
  • Coordinate daily work activities with the foreman, project management, and other construction trades to support project schedules.
  • Communicate material needs, field conditions, delays, or installation issues to the foreman or project manager.
  • Follow OSHA, company, and site-specific safety policies while maintaining a clean, organized, and safe work area.
  • Perform quality checks on completed work and correct deficiencies as needed.
  • Accurately document time worked and material usage as required.
  • Safely operate hand tools, power tools, ladders, scaffolding, aerial lifts, and other equipment necessary to perform mechanical insulation work.
Required Skills and Experience
  • 3+ years of mechanical insulation experience preferred.
  • Experience applying insulation to HVAC piping, plumbing piping, ductwork, and mechanical equipment on commercial or industrial construction projects.
  • Working knowledge of mechanical insulation materials, vapor barriers, protective jacketing, and industry installation practices.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, construction drawings, specifications, and insulation schedules.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality workmanship.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced construction environment.
  • Pipefitter license is a plus, but not required.
  • Valid driver's license is required.
Working Conditions

Environment

  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
  • Evening and/or early morning, and/or weekend/holiday hours periodically.
  • Will work both indoors and outdoors in various climate conditions ranging from very cold to very hot and humid.
