Job summary

Exponent’s Vehicle Engineering Practice seeks an Instrumentation Technician 1 for the Phoenix Test & Engineering Center. You will join a technician team handling system, subsystem, and component-level tests, using data acquisition systems and instrumentation to support consultants.

The role requires an Associates degree in Electronics or related field and at least 1 year of instrumented testing experience, with strong soldering, circuit know‑how, and teamwork.

Qualifications

  • Associates degree in Electronics, Electronics Technology, Instrumentation and Controls Systems, or equivalent.
  • A minimum of 1 year of instrumented testing experience or a combination of 1 year of instrumentation experience and relevant education in electronics.
  • Familiarity with data acquisition, troubleshooting equipment (O-scope, DVM, etc.), and typical sensors (pressure transducers, accelerometers, load cells, potentiometers, etc.)
  • Excellent soldering ability and good electronic circuit design techniques
  • Excellent verbal communications skills and a demonstrated dedication to quality and accuracy
  • Ability to operate common hand and machine tools
  • Ability to work independently and in multidisciplinary teams

Responsibilities

  • Setting up and conducting instrumented test programs of all types.
  • Setting up data acquisition systems, including Dewesoft, Diversity Technical Systems (DTS), National Instruments (cDAQ, LabView, Diadem), automotive CAN devices, and others.
  • Configure data acquisition systems and assist with set up for battery testing (cell, module, and pack levels).
  • Applying strain gauges and completing custom wiring for load measurements for specific projects.
  • Working individually and within a team to determine test methodologies and document test execution.
  • Calibrating, maintaining, and repairing instrumentation equipment and transducers.
  • Troubleshooting instrumentation and other electronic systems.
  • Circuit design, bread boarding, and interpreting electrical/electronic schematics.
  • Building cable assemblies interfacing with various equipment.
  • Serving as a lead technician in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities.
  • Supporting consultant engineers by developing and creating custom test setups.
  • Specifying and evaluating new lab test equipment for existing and new specs.
  • Building basic electronics equipment used to conduct testing and interconnect hardware.
