Job summary

Wunderlich-Malec Engineering (WM) is hiring Instrumentation Field Technicians for our Tigard, Oregon location. A minimum of two years of field experience is required and you will support customers daily, helping ensure project success through hands-on instrumentation and control tasks.

On-site work with diverse industrial environments, strong teamwork, and the ability to travel to client sites are essential. WM offers competitive benefits and an ESOP ownership experience.

Qualifications

  • Two years of field instrumentation experience.
  • Ability to read and interpret Process and Instrumentation diagrams and control drawings.
  • Experience with PLCs, motor control equipment, and telemetry systems is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Spec, start-up, calibration, and troubleshooting of site instrumentation.
  • Read and interpret P&ID, control loop, and panel drawings; document current state of control systems.
  • Troubleshoot motor control equipment and drive systems; ensure safety requirements.

We have several Instrumentation Field Technician positions open at our Tigard, Oregon location. Minimum of two years of field experience. Each technician will play a key role in the business unit due to daily exposure to customers and supporting them as needed. This position is a representation of the entire effort to support the customer and is extremely important to the overall success of the relationship with the customer.

Important: This position is not eligible for employer‑sponsored work authorization, including H‑1B sponsorship.

Responsibilities
  • Specification, start‑up, calibration, and troubleshooting of site‑related instrumentation (flow, pressure, temperature, position, vibration, current transmitters; analyzers for dissolved oxygen, ORP, turbidity, pH, conductivity, particle counting).
  • Read and interpret Process and Instrumentation, Control Loop, installation details, and Control Panel drawings; document current state of control systems with red‑line as‑built markup.
  • Troubleshoot motor control equipment – FVNR Motor Starters, Variable Frequency Drives, Soft Starts; ensure awareness of safety requirements.
  • Develop, modify and troubleshoot SCADA software (GE Vernova Cimplicity and Inductive Automation Ignition). Knowledge of industrial protocols (Modbus, ProfiNet, IO‑Link, MQTT, Sparkplug B, Ethernet/IP) is a plus.
  • Troubleshoot PLC logic (Rockwell SLC, PLC5, CLX; Emerson RX3i, 90/30), relay logic, and related control equipment.
  • Recommend necessary equipment modifications in the field – both mechanical and electrical.
  • Install and start‑up computer and networking equipment; experience with industrial networking (DLR, PRP, Daisy Chain, Star) is a plus.
Minimum Requirements
Education

Technical Associate degree or equivalent training/experience may be substituted.

Experience
  • Over 2 years of experience with Instrumentation, system drawings, motor control equipment, PLC equipment, equipment modifications, telemetry equipment, computer & networking equipment.
  • Ability to work professionally with customers and maintain business relationships.
  • Team‑work skills.
  • Valid driver’s license with ability to travel to client sites.
  • Fluent in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel).
  • Experience with general contractors and other trades (electrical, mechanical, HVAC) a plus.
  • Building Management System experience a plus.
  • Semiconductor environment control experience (clean‑room, heating, cooling, waste management) a plus.
Physical Demands of Position

Must have full dexterity of hands and feet; ladder and possible confined‑space access; use of hand tools. Needs visual acuity, color perception, hearing, clear speech, driving ability, lifting, climbing, ability to mount/dismount equipment, and tolerance for wide temperature ranges, sun exposure, moisture, and potential exposure to hazardous materials and electrical voltages.

Working / Residence Plan
  • 80%‑100% work site location (outside of PTO).
  • Standard Monday‑Friday hours with occasional overtime over 40 hours; possible weekend requirements.
  • Construction and industrial environment; frequent PC and cell‑phone usage.
Working Environment

On‑site office and diverse industrial environments. Work may involve variable temperatures, moisture, uneven or slippery surfaces, frequent standing, occasional bending, squatting, climbing, twisting, balancing, and reaching; exposure to noise, vibrations, chemicals; may require irregular or extended hours and on‑call status.
