The Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) Power Generation Engineer drives the design, integration, commissioning, and operational readiness of control, automation, protection, and monitoring systems supporting mission-critical data center power-generation infrastructure. The role requires extensive experience with gas turbines, reciprocating generators, diesel and natural-gas generation, generator controls, plant control systems, and associated instrumentation.

This engineer partners with design, engineering, construction, delivery, commissioning and operations teams from project concept through operational handoff to ensure power-generation controls are resilient, safe, cyber-secure, maintainable, and capable of meeting data center availability requirements.

Key Responsibilities
  • Serve as the I&C technical subject matter expert for power-generation systems from early design through construction, commissioning, turnover, and operations support.
  • Define controls architecture, instrumentation requirements, automation philosophy, functional specifications, control narratives, alarm philosophy, and cause-and-effect matrices.
  • Design and review control systems for gas turbines, reciprocating generators, diesel and natural-gas generators, alternators, fuel systems, cooling systems, lubrication systems, ventilation, exhaust, emissions controls, and balance-of-plant equipment.
  • Specify, review, and validate PLCs, DCS platforms, generator control panels, turbine controls, SCADA systems, HMIs, remote monitoring, historians, sensors, transmitters, actuators, valves, and network interfaces.
  • Ensure reliable integration among generator controls, paralleling switchgear, protection relays, automatic transfer switches, utility interfaces, UPS systems, building management systems, and data center infrastructure-management platforms.
  • Partner with mechanical, electrical, controls, network, and cybersecurity teams to deliver interoperable and maintainable systems.
  • Review design packages, equipment submittals, I/O lists, P&IDs, wiring diagrams, loop diagrams, panel drawings, network architecture, and vendor control narratives.
  • Lead technical review of OEM and contractor proposals, factory acceptance tests, site acceptance tests, software configurations, and control-system modifications.
  • Support construction teams through installation verification, field inspections, loop checks, punch-list resolution, commissioning readiness reviews, and technical change control.
  • Develop and execute commissioning procedures for instrumentation calibration, loop checks, functional tests, sequence-of-operations testing, generator startup, synchronization, load sharing, transfer testing, load-bank testing, black-start testing, and integrated system testing.
  • Diagnose control‑system faults, communication failures, alarms, trips, failed starts, synchronization issues, and abnormal equipment behavior; lead root‑cause analysis and corrective actions.
  • Establish operating procedures, alarm response procedures, bypass‑management standards, maintenance plans, calibration requirements, software backup and recovery processes, and control‑system documentation.
  • Ensure commissioning and turnover packages include validated as‑built drawings, control narratives, logic diagrams, software backups, setpoints, test records, and training materials.
  • Support operations teams with troubleshooting, performance monitoring, periodic testing, maintenance strategy, upgrades, and lifecycle replacement planning.
  • Apply functional‑safety, cybersecurity, access‑control, and change‑management practices to protect critical control environments.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable codes, standards, safety requirements, and environmental/emissions regulations.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Instrumentation Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
  • 10+ years extensive experience designing, commissioning, operating, or maintaining I & C systems for industrial, utility, or mission-critical power-generation systems.
  • Strong working knowledge of gas turbine and reciprocating generator control systems, generator paralleling, synchronization, load sharing, protective interlocks, and emergency power systems.
