Job summary

ExxonMobil in Baytown, TX seeks an experienced Instrumentation Engineer to design, configure, program and maintain instrumentation systems across the complex. You will ensure safe and reliable operations, support SIS, DCS and PLCs, and work with vendors to implement robust instrumentation solutions.

The role requires a bachelor’s degree in Electrical or related engineering and at least 3 years in petrochemical environments, with strong hands-on diagnostic skills and knowledge of process

Qualifications

• 3+ years of experience in the petrochemical, refining, or chemical industry.
• Knowledge of process measurement technologies including pressure, temperature, level, and flow.
• Experience specifying and applying instrumentation, control valves, and shutdown systems.
• Ability to read and interpret P&IDs and familiarity with ISA/API standards.
• Understanding of field instrumentation, signal transmission, communications, and process safety requirements.
• Experience troubleshooting instrumentation and control systems and resolving field issues.
• Working knowledge of DCS, SIS, and industrial control systems from major vendors.

• Support safe and reliable operations of instrumentation equipment within the Complex.
• Sizing and specifying instrumentation for changes.
• Interface with vendors and contractors to maintain, troubleshoot, repair/replace, configure/tune/program, test/commission/de-commission, etc.
• Support development of equipment strategies, understanding redundancy, reliability, and maintainability.

What role you will play on our team

Provide instrument engineering expertise at the ExxonMobil site in Baytown,Tx

What you will do

The work includes engineering design, configuration, programming, maintenance, trouble-shooting, failure analysis, performance analysis in support of safe and reliable operations of instrumentation equipment within the Complex, including:

• Field instrumentation for process measurement (e.g. Pressure, Temperature, Level, and Flow) as well as specialty measurements (density, vibration) and control valves, shutdown valves, and their transmission systems (e.g. 4-20mA, HART, ProfiBus)
• Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS)
• Machinery controls and protection systems
• Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC’s) for monitoring and control of packaged systems
• Instrumentation cabling, wiring, junction box, power supply and distribution, UPS, and associated TCP/IP, SCADA, Modbus networking (switches, routers, Ethernet, fiber optics, etc.) and transmission systems.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Sizing and specifying various types of instrumentation for new or existing instruments undergoing a change
• Supporting the maintenance team and interfacing with vendors and contractors to maintain, troubleshoot, repair/replace, configure/tune/program, test/commission/de-commission, etc.
• Supporting development of equipment strategies, understanding the impact of equipment sparing, redundancy, reliability, availability, maintainability, and maintenance cost in support of operations excellence and capital efficiency
• Participating in activities related to safety, risk assessment and safety incident investigations related to instrumentation equipment.

Primary contributions will be at the individual contributor level with close interfaces within the immediate work group and interfaces with other disciplines within engineering and maintenance.

About you

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Electronic, or related Engineering discipline.
• 3+ years of experience in the petrochemical, refining, or chemical industry.
• Knowledge of process measurement technologies including pressure, temperature, level, and flow.
• Experience specifying and applying instrumentation, control valves, and shutdown systems.
• Ability to read and interpret P&IDs and familiarity with ISA/API standards.
• Understanding of field instrumentation, signal transmission, communications, and process safety requirements.
• Experience troubleshooting instrumentation and control systems and resolving field issues.
• Working knowledge of DCS, SIS, and industrial control systems from major vendors (e.g., Honeywell, Emerson, Yokogawa, Schneider Electric, HIMA).
• Familiarity with safety design principles, HAZOPs, risk assessments, SIL processes, and hazardous area classifications.
• Strong understanding of equipment specifications, standards, and reliability strategies.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with SmartPlant Instrumentation (SPI) or similar engineering software.
• Knowledge of SCADA, industrial networking, and system integration.
• Familiarity with Industrial Control Systems Cybersecurity (ICS/OT Security).
• Experience with machinery and fired equipment control and monitoring systems.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
