Job description

TAMKO is seeking an Instrumentation and Controls Supervisor for its Dallas, TX manufacturing facility. This role directs and coordinates the activities of Electrical & Instrumentation Technicians and Automation Engineering Technicians engaged in troubleshooting, repair, maintenance, and installation of control devices, instrumentation, and electrical utility systems, and leads improvement work executed through PLC and HMI changes and hardware/distribution upgrades.

The position reports to the Engineering Manager and carries direct supervisory responsibility for the Instrumentation & Controls technical team. Beyond the technical scope, this role is expected to run the day-to-day floor leadership of that team — setting the standard for how work gets planned, executed, and closed out, and building technicians’ ability to identify and correct gaps in their own work without needing to be told. The candidate selected will work primarily Monday through Friday during day shifts, with flexibility for extended hours and on-call duties required.

• Identify and lead electrical and controls continuous improvement initiatives while managing direct reports in the execution of improvement projects, holding the team to defined standards and following up until commitments are actually closed — not just assigned.
• Facilitate on-time and orderly execution of controls projects through internal plant resources or centralized corporate teams and contracts.
• Collaborate with plant supervisors to diagnose and resolve electrical and controls related issues impacting throughput and equipment uptime.
• Assist in scheduling repair, maintenance, and installation of instrumentation devices and controls systems to ensure continuous production operations.
• Offer expertise and knowledge to resolve complex electrical and controls problems and prevent reoccurrence by identifying gaps in training or procedures.
• Help resolve logistical conflicts and develop solutions to overcome technical barriers in improvement projects executed by direct reports, giving technicians real ownership of their assigned scope rather than reviewing every decision.
• Direct maintenance activities and provide or arrange expert advice on main power infrastructure systems to the MCCs.
• Develop and maintain preventive maintenance programs in conjunction with engineering and maintenance staff.
• Review production, quality control, and maintenance reports and statistics to plan, adjust, and prioritize maintenance activities and identify opportunities for controls improvement.
• Plan, develop, and implement new methods and procedures to improve operations, reduce costs, and increase the efficient utilization of labor and materials.
• Direct, train, and supervise team members to enhance work performance and ensure adherence to company policies and procedures, adapting coaching approach to each technician’s working style while holding a single consistent standard for the team.
• Track compliance with TAMKO’s electrical safety requirements and lead annual electrical safety training and compliance activities.
• Approve and monitor timesheets, vacation schedule, and coordinate vacancy coverage.
• Document and hand off institutional knowledge — troubleshooting history, equipment quirks, vendor relationships — in a form the team can reference without depending on any one person, including this role.
• Leadership Expectations
• This role leads a technical team with a wide range of work and communication styles — from technicians who push hard for autonomy and direct answers, to those who work best with structure and explicit reassurance before taking a stand. Success in this role depends on:
• Setting a standard through what is actually enforced day to day, not just what is written in a procedure — and being consistent about it across the team.
• Delegating real ownership of technical scope to technicians rather than retaining approval on every decision, while still being the one accountable if the outcome misses the mark.
• Adjusting how feedback and direction are delivered person to person — direct and efficient with technicians who want it that way, and more deliberate about drawing out genuine agreement (not just quick compliance) from technicians who tend to go quiet in disagreement.
• Escalating and resolving cross-functional friction (particularly with Maintenance) through structured problem-solving rather than letting issues go unaddressed or become personal.
• Being comfortable stress-testing his or her own plan before presenting it — inviting challenge rather than treating pushback from technicians as a threat to authority.

Position Requirements

• Minimum five to ten years of manufacturing experience.
• High school diploma; Associate's degree (A.A.) or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school, or five (5) years of related controls installation and troubleshooting experience and/or training, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Proficiency in PLC programming and motion control systems (Siemens preferred).
• Experience with HMI programming (Aveva preferred).
• Proficient in troubleshooting, calibrating, configuring, and integrating process instrumentation (flow, level, temperature, density, and related process variables)
• Strong foundation in electrical theory and control system fundamentals
• Skilled in configuring and troubleshooting industrial network protocols (Profinet, Profibus, EtherNet/IP, Modbus, etc.)
• Familiarity with industrial electrical distribution systems, safe troubleshooting, and NEC requirements.
• Demonstrated experience supervising or leading a technical team, including holding people accountable to a standard and developing their independent judgment over time — not just directing task assignments.
• Strong presentation and communication skills, with demonstrated ability to flex delivery style across technicians with different working and communication preferences.
• Occasional travel for technical skills training and other professional development opportunities.

Physical Requirements/Work Environment

• While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be able to position himself/herself to operate, inspect, troubleshoot, repair, and/or maintain heavy plant equipment. This may require climbing stairs/ladders, bending, kneeling, crawling, squatting and/or stooping. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and may occasionally lift or move heavier objects with assistance.
• While performing the duties of this job, the employee may work around moving mechanical parts, at elevated heights, where dusts and fumes could be present in the air, with or in proximity to chemicals, in hot environments, around electrical equipment, and in a loud environment. The employee must have the ability to understand and mitigate these and other risks, including by following all prescribed safety rules, and must have the ability to wear appropriate personal protective equipment, if necessary.
