Job summary

Brunel in Midland, TX is seeking an Instrumentation and Controls Engineer III to support Facilities Engineering teams in the Midland Basin. You will conduct field walks, markup IC&E drawings, manage MOC routing, and perform other oil and gas IC&E activities.

Responsibilities include monitoring instrumentation and control systems, developing specifications, supervising installation and commissioning, and participating in area risk assessments and incident investigations.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field or equivalent experience.
  • Strong knowledge of ISA, NEC, API RP 551, and NFPA 70E standards.
  • Ability to read P&IDs, electrical drawings, and control narratives.
  • Experience with PLC, DCS, F&G, and protection system upgrades.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor instrumentation, electrical equipment, and control systems for safe operations.

Job title: Instrumentation and Controls Engineer III

Location: Midland, TX

Schedule: M-F, 40/hrs w/OT

Duration: 12-month W2 contract (possibility of extension)

PRIMARY ROLE FOR THIS ASSIGNMENT

The primary responsibility of this position is to support Facilities Engineering teams in the Midland Basin through field walks, IC&E drawing markups (with an emphasis on Instrumentation & Controls), Management of Change (MOC) routing, and other oil and gas-related IC&E activities outlined below.

ADDITIONAL TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform ongoing monitoring, evaluation, and management of instrumentation, medium- and low-voltage electrical equipment, and control systems, utilizing data analysis to ensure safe and efficient operations.
  • Develop specifications for instrumentation, medium- and low-voltage electrical systems, and control systems, including the selection of appropriate instruments, sensors, electrical equipment, and control devices for onshore facilities.
  • Supervise the installation and commissioning of IC&E systems and equipment to ensure proper functionality and compliance with safety and regulatory requirements.
  • Participate in area risk assessments, HAZOP studies, hazard reviews, and Critical Operating Parameter evaluations.
  • Contribute to incident investigation activities.
  • Support opportunity management efforts through identification of improvement opportunities and development of project scopes of work.
  • Ensure instrumentation, electrical, and control systems comply with applicable safety and environmental standards to reduce risk and environmental impact.
  • Gather and evaluate data from instrumentation, electrical, and control systems to enhance operational performance and identify optimization opportunities.
  • Recommend and implement improvements to instrumentation, electrical, and control systems to maintain alignment with current industry standards and technologies.
  • Support Safety, Health, and Environment (SHE) initiatives by implementing and enforcing procedures that protect personnel, equipment, and the environment.
  • Provide operational engineering support for modifications, repairs, and changes to plant pressure equipment through the Management of Change process.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including facilities engineers, machinery engineers, operations personnel, and maintenance teams, to achieve project goals.
  • Troubleshoot, diagnose, and resolve issues involving instrumentation, medium- and low-voltage electrical equipment, and control systems.
  • Provide engineering support during plant shutdown activities.
  • Support both brownfield modifications and greenfield developments. Prepare and review IC&E engineering deliverables such as one-line diagrams, Cause & Effect diagrams, control narratives, wiring diagrams, installation details, instrument indexes, cable schedules, and other engineering documentation completed internally or by contractors and subcontractors to verify compliance with company standards, specifications, and regulatory requirements.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • Strong understanding of equipment maintenance practices and maintenance management programs.
  • Ability to read and review P&IDs, electrical drawings, one-line diagrams, panel wiring diagrams, and instrument loop diagrams.
  • Experience with PLC, DCS, Fire & Gas (F&G), and other protection system upgrades and retrofits.
  • Knowledge of instrument applications in hazardous area environments.
  • Experience selecting and applying pressure, flow, and level measurement systems.
  • Ability to troubleshoot instrument loops, control systems, and tuning-related issues.
  • Knowledge of low- and medium-voltage motor control systems, including contactors, smart overloads, soft starters, VFDs, and associated communication methods.
  • Experience specifying and selecting LV/MV transformers, switchgear, protective relays, MCCs, motors, variable frequency drives, and power cabling.
  • Familiarity with industrial networking and field communications, including Ethernet/IP, Modbus TCP/IP, Modbus RTU, RS-485, RS-232, MQTT, radio communications, fiber optics, and managed network switches.
  • Experience with maintenance and troubleshooting of power systems and power generation equipment.
  • Familiarity with protective relay coordination, testing, and settings.
  • Knowledge of electrical equipment and circuit applications within hazardous locations.
  • Experience troubleshooting electrical distribution systems and electrical equipment.
  • Familiarity with analytics and visualization platforms such as Ignition, SEEQ, and Spotfire, including dashboard development for operational support and troubleshooting.
  • Experience implementing and supporting SCADA, DCS, and PLC systems.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting Upstream Oil & Gas Production operations.

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related engineering discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Strong knowledge of engineering standards, specifications, codes, and safety requirements, including:
  • ISA standards
  • National Electrical Code (NEC)
  • U.S. regulations and standards such as ISA84, API RP 551, and NEC
  • NETA MTS requirements for electrical maintenance and inspections
  • NFPA 70E Electrical Safety in the Workplace (Arc Flash)
  • Other applicable industry standards
  • Ability to work effectively under tight deadlines, demanding workloads, and frequently changing priorities.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
  • Fluent English communication skills, both written and verbal, particularly in technical and business environments.
