AtkinsRéalis is seeking an experienced Instrumentation and Controls Designer in Bothell, WA to join our engineering team. The candidate will prepare drawings, perform drafting in AutoCAD and Revit, and support installation and commissioning under the Lead I&C Engineer.
Ideal candidates hold an AA/AS in drafting or Instrumentation, 2+ years of I&C design experience, and proficiency with SmartPlant, AutoCAD, and P&IDs to produce accurate, compliant drawings across the project lifecycle.
Qualifications
- AA in drafting or AS in Instrumentation/Industrial Automation from a qualified school required.
- 2+ years industrial or power plant I&C design experience preferred.
- Ability to read and interpret P&IDs and installation details.
- Familiarity with drafting standards and document control procedures.
- Strong math skills and problem-solving abilities.
Responsibilities
- Layout I&C drawings from notes, vendor drawings, SOW or DBD.
- Produce wiring diagrams, location plans, loop sheets and junction details.
- Draft using AutoCAD 2D/3D and Revit; create 3D models in project plant-wide model.
- Utilize SmartPlant Suite to render instrument data and ensure placement accuracy.
- Provide installation details and maintain project documentation.
- Check drawings against other disciplines and support site teams.

We are seeking a Instrumentation and Controls Designer to join our team in Bothell, WA.
Our Engineering group in Bothell, WA USA is looking for a full-time experienced Instrumentation and Controls (I&C) Designer to join our growing team. Under the direction of the project Lead I&C Engineer, the Candidate will be responsible for technical accuracy, quality, and preparation of drawing packages within budget and schedule constraints. Prepare assignments, perform design and drafting and check the work of drafters as required.
Under the direction of Design Team members and/or engineers, the Employee will be expected to perform the following duties:
Complete layout of I&C related engineering drawings based upon notes, sketches, vendor drawings, the Statement of Work (SOW) or Design Basis Document (DBD) and general direction. Drawings shall include, but not be limited to wiring diagrams, location plans, instrument installation details, junction box details, network architecture block diagrams, loop sheets.
Perform drafting work via AutoCAD (2D and 3D) or Revit (per project requirements).Place 3D renderings of instrumentation items in the project plant wide 3D model utilizing SmartPlant 3D, AutoCAD Plant 3D, or Revit (per project requirements) to ensure correctness of location and interference checking.
Utilizing Instrumentation design software, catalog instrumentation information for reporting purposes.
Provide job specific instrument installation details using developed standard details as required and maintain documentation for files.
Check vendor and other discipline drawings against own or other designed work for correctness.
Provide information to other designers on interface requirements (i.e., equipment spacing, cable numbering, instrument numbering, control philosophy, flow element requirements, etc.).
Provide material take-offs for bulk commodities from completed engineering documents.
Provide on-site and/or remote project Instrumentation support to Construction and Start Up personnel.
Maintain project files of previous revisions per ISO 9001 policies.
Check work of other members of the design team when needed.
Will require some technical and/or procedural help.
Be highly motivated, proactive and show a focused approach to the tasks at hand.
Perform other duties as assigned.

The ideal Candidate should have the following skills, knowledge, qualifications, and experience (as a minimum):
AA in drafting or AS degree in Instrumentation / Industrial Automation or equivalent from a qualified technical school is required.
Previous experience as an Instrument and Controls Designer, with a minimum two years of industrial or power plant design experience or equivalent.
Comprehensive understanding of instrument types and their installation procedures.
Thorough understanding of documentation and document control procedures.
Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written forms.
Proficient in computer software applications such as Microsoft Office.
Strong understanding of mathematics, including algebra and trigonometry, is required.
Strong knowledge of drafting and design standards and techniques in the area of electrical, mechanical, piping, structural or instrumentation drafting.
Proficient in AutoCAD, having AutoCAD 2D and 3D training and be able to use standard AutoCAD system tools.
Proficient with the SmartPlant Software Suite (SPI, SPPID, SP3D).
Have a strong knowledge of standard drafting symbols.
Have a strong knowledge of AutoCAD drafting standards including Paper Space / Model Space and adhering to Company drafting standards.
Have a basic understanding of electronics, electricity, solid state, digital devices, programmable logic controllers (PLC), Distributed Control Systems (DCS), transmitters and transducers for temperature, level, flow, and pressure, recorders and more.
Ability to interpret and understand P&IDs (Process and Instrumentation Diagrams) and incorporate into the I&C design.
Have the ability to work independently with moderate supervision upon assignment of tasks.
Have a positive work ethic and act in a professional manner.
Have good problem solving and interpersonal skills.

Expected compensation range is between $63,000 - $104,000 annually OR $30.00 - $50.00 hourly depending on skills, experience, and geographical location.
