Job summary

Artheon is seeking an Instrument Technician to support field surveying operations across transportation, infrastructure, and land development projects in New York. You will assist the Survey Crew Chief, operate and maintain surveying instruments, and help collect precise field data.

The ideal candidate has 1+ year of surveying-related experience, the ability to read plans, and a strong focus on safety and accuracy.

Qualifications

  • 1+ year of experience working in surveying, construction layout, engineering field work, or a related discipline preferred.
  • Ability to learn and operate surveying instruments and electronic data collectors.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accurate field measurements.
  • Ability to read and understand basic construction plans and survey drawings.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather and terrain conditions.
  • Ability to safely lift and carry surveying equipment and materials.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Survey Crew Chief with daily field surveying operations.
  • Set up, operate, and maintain surveying equipment including robotic total stations, conventional total stations, GPS/GNSS equipment, data collectors, levels and other surveying instruments.
  • Perform field measurements and collect accurate survey data.
  • Assist with establishing horizontal and vertical control points.
  • Perform construction layout and stakeout activities.
  • Assist with boundary, topographic, utility, roadway, and infrastructure surveys.
  • Locate and identify existing utilities, structures, property features, roadways, drainage systems, and other physical improvements.
  • Assist with construction staking for roads, utilities, structures, drainage, and other infrastructure improvements.
  • Maintain accurate field notes, sketches, measurements, and electronic data.
  • Download, organize, and transfer field data for use by survey technicians, surveyors, and project managers.
  • Assist with instrument calibration, equipment checks, and routine maintenance.
  • Verify equipment is properly functioning and report issues to the Party Chief or Survey Manager.
  • Follow established survey procedures, project specifications, and quality-control standards.
  • Maintain a safe work environment and comply with company and project-specific safety requirements.
  • Work effectively as part of a survey crew and communicate field conditions to supervisors and project staff.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Instrument Technician to join our Surveying and Geomatics team. The Instrument Technician will support field survey operations on a variety of transportation, infrastructure, construction, municipal, and land development projects.

This position is responsible for assisting the Survey Crew Chief with field measurements, operating and maintaining surveying instruments, collecting accurate field data, setting survey points, and performing general field surveying activities. The ideal candidate is comfortable working outdoors, has an interest in surveying and geomatics, and is eager to develop their technical skills and advance within the surveying profession.

Responsibilities
  • Assist the Survey Crew Chief with daily field surveying operations.
  • Set up, operate, and maintain surveying equipment including:
    • Robotic total stations
    • Conventional total stations
    • GPS/GNSS equipment
    • Data collectors

  • Familiarity with AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Trimble Business Center, or other survey/geomatics software.
  • Surveying or Geomatics coursework or degree.
  • OSHA‑10 or other applicable safety training.
  • Interest in pursuing a career progression toward Party Chief, Survey Technician, or Land Surveyor.
  • Ability to work outdoors for extended periods.
  • Ability to walk and work over uneven terrain, construction sites, roadways, and other active project areas.
  • Ability to lift and carry survey equipment weighing approximately 50 pounds.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, and work around construction equipment and active infrastructure.
  • Ability to work occasional early mornings, evenings, weekends, or extended hours based on project requirements.

Final compensation will be determined based on factors such as experience, skills, qualifications, internal equity, and geographic location.
