Job summary

Gessner Engineering is seeking an Instrument Operator in Bryan, TX to support field surveys. You will operate and maintain survey equipment, download data, and assist the Party Chief with daily tasks and drawings.

Responsibilities include equipment loading, field notes preparation, and mentoring junior team members. This role requires outdoor work, physical fitness, and the ability to work alone or in a small crew under varying weather conditions.

Qualifications

• 4+ years of survey experience required.
• Ability to lift 50 pounds and work outdoors in varying weather.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Capable of standing or walking long periods.

Responsibilities

• Assist the Party Chief as directed.
• Operate and maintain all surveying equipment (Static GPS, RTK, GPS, total station).
• Ensure equipment is in proper working order and secure.
• Prepare field notes and maps; maintain daily status forms.
• Mentor new team members on survey procedures.
• Assist with project drawings and daily operations.

Instrument Operator

Salary Range: $20.00 To $24.00 Hourly

The Instrument Operator operates and maintains all survey equipment, work under the direction of the Party Chief, collects and downloads survey data, directs loading and storage of equipment and maintains safety standards. The role of the Instrument man is to assist the Party Chief as directed.

Responsibilities

• Assist the Party Chief as directed
• Understand procedures and operation of all surveying equipment, i.e. Static GPS, RTK, GPS, conventional total station, data collectors, levels, pipeline locator and magnetometer
• Ensure that all equipment is in proper working order
• Provide daily maintenance and security of equipment
• Report all damaged and defective equipment to appropriate Supervisor
• Supervise and assist with loading of equipment, boats, off-road vehicles
• Mentor/train rod person (new team members) on proper survey procedures and operation of equipment
• Assist Party Chief as needed with daily operations including review of project related drawings
• Complete daily status forms prior to departure from office MS Planner or DFR
• Proper storage of equipment
• Preparation of field notes; understand how to write and read field notes and maps
• Assume responsibilities of party chief in his absence

Qualifications & Skills

• Verbal and written communication skills
• 4+ years of Survey Experience
• Land navigation and map reading competency
• Willing to work alone and/or part of a small team
• Physical fitness and dexterity including the ability to lift and carry 50 pounds, cross fences when gates are unavailable, and stand or walk long periods - working outdoors in varying weather condition in varying terrain

Preferred Qualifications (Not Required)

• AutoCAD experience in drafting or use of Carlson plugin
• Current FAA Part 107 certification
• Experience with Leica robotic total station and GNSS
