Job summary

  • Must be able to wear PPE and climb ladders, lift 50 pounds, and work outside in varied weather.
  • Must pass written and hands-on skill tests.
  • Familiarity with handheld communicators and laptops for instrument communication is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Install, test, calibrate, troubleshoot, and repair refinery field instrumentation (meters, transmitters, transducers, switches, solenoids, relays, control valves, regulators, actuators, positioners).
  • Maintain and repair instrument-related equipment across process units and maintenance areas.
  • Service electronic and pneumatic instruments; perform routine tests to verify accuracy.
  • Troubleshoot control systems (DCS, PLCs, vibration monitoring, and other instrumentation).
  • Interpret drawings and diagrams (P&IDs, loop drawings, schematics) to diagnose issues.
  • Calibrate instrumentation per specs; manage configuration data.
  • Follow procedures and codes; propose improvements to procedures and docs.
  • Document work performed (work orders, calibration sheets, logs).
  • Communicate safety and equipment issues to supervision and stakeholders.
  • Support overtime, callouts, and off-shift work for safe operations.
  • Participate in safety meetings and follow Health, Safety & Environmental requirements.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Marathon Detroit Michigan Refinery has open positions for Instrument Technicians.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Install, test, calibrate, troubleshoot, and repair refinery field instrumentation such as but not limited to , meters, transmitters, transducers, switches, solenoids, relays, control valves, regulators, actuators, positioners.
  • Maintain and repair instrument-related equipment across process units and maintenance areas.
  • Service and troubleshoot both electronic and pneumatic instruments; perform routine tests and measurements to verify accuracy and reliability.
  • Troubleshoot and repair control and monitoring systems including Distributed Control Systems (DCS), PLCs, vibration monitoring systems, and other specialty instrumentation.
  • Interpret and use drawings and documentation (P&IDs, loop drawings, logic diagrams, schematics, wiring diagrams, equipment manuals, and procedures) to diagnose issues and perform corrective work.
  • Calibrate instrumentation per specifications; upload and download field instrumentation configuration/diagnostic data as required.
  • Perform maintenance in accordance with established written procedures and applicable codes/standards; identify opportunities to improve/revise work procedures and documentation.
  • Document work performed accurately and timely (e.g., work orders, calibration sheets/test forms, condition reports, maintenance logs, and service history).
  • Communicate significant safety and equipment issues promptly to supervision and relevant stakeholders; support a positive, collaborative work environment.
  • Callouts, overtime, and off-shift work are required to support safe, reliable refinery operations.
  • Participate in safety meetings/toolbox talks and execute work in accordance with site/MPC Health, Safety & Environmental requirements and applicable standards.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Must have a High School Diploma or GED.
  • Must have a valid driver's license.
  • Must have at least one of the following: Associate degree or equivalent in science (specialization in Electronics or Instrumentation), possess an appropriate certificate from a recognized technical school or association, or possess a higher degree in a related Engineering Program, or have at least 2 years work experience in an equivalent role.
  • Three to five years relevant work experience is preferred.
  • Must have strong computer skills.
  • Must be able to physically wear appropriate PPE and perform job and which includes be able to climb vertical ladders, lift 50 pounds and be able to work outside in various weather conditions.
  • Must be able to pass both a written test and a hands‑on skill demonstration test.
  • Familiarity with handheld communicators and using laptops to communicate with smart instruments preferred.
PAY AND BENEFITS:
  • $50.97/hour with scheduled annual increases per Collective Bargaining Agreement
  • Company sponsored annual bonus with target of 6% of eligible annual wages
