University of Virginia’s Building Automation Services seeks an Instrument Calibration Technician to calibrate, verify, and document sensors and instruments across more than 600 buildings, including laboratories and clinical spaces. Qualifications

• Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
• 2+ years instrument calibration or instrumentation maintenance in commercial, industrial, or institutional settings.
• Principles of instrument calibration and measurement accuracy; understanding of analog and digital control signals (0–10V, 4–20mA, resistance).
• Proficiency with multimeters, signal generators, manometers, temperature references, and loop calibrators.
• Strong record-keeping and reporting skills.
• Familiarity with electronic measurement devices and control instrumentation.

The Building Automation Services (BAS) team at the University of Virginia invites applications for an Instrument Calibration Technician. As part of UVA’s Building Automation Services (BAS) team, the Instrument Calibration Technician supports departments across the University by calibrating, verifying, and documenting sensors and instruments — temperature, pressure, humidity, flow, and electrical measurement devices — used in building systems and environmental monitoring across more than 600 buildings.

UVA’s campus is unusually varied — historic academic buildings, active research labs, and clinical spaces all operating side by side. Keeping the instrumentation that monitors and controls those environments accurate and well-documented is essential work, and that’s what this role is focused on.

Working independently or as part of a team, you will use certified reference standards to test and adjust field devices, diagnose signal errors and instrument drift, and partner with automation service technicians to address measurement issues affecting system performance on Johnson Controls Metasys and Automated Logic WebCTRL platforms.

Key Responsibilities

Calibration & Verification

• Perform routine and corrective calibration of temperature, pressure, flow, humidity, and electrical sensors and transmitters across occupied, research, and clinical environments.
• Verify instrument accuracy against certified reference standards and test equipment.
• Diagnose and resolve instrument drift, signal errors, and field device performance failures.
• Inspect instruments for wear, environmental damage, or emerging failure trends.

Documentation & Compliance

• Maintain audit-ready calibration records — including results, tolerances, adjustments, and compliance documentation — that support regulatory requirements in clinical and research settings.
• Ensure all calibration activities meet applicable safety, quality, and regulatory standards.
• Log work orders and calibration activities in AiM or equivalent Computerized Maintenance Management Software (CMMS).

Collaboration & Support

• Partner with BAS automation service technicians to troubleshoot control system inputs and outputs tied to instrument performance.
• Communicate calibration findings, anomalies, and recommendations clearly to the service team and stakeholders.
• Maintain and manage the team’s calibration tools, meters, and reference devices.

Required Qualifications

• Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
• Experience: 2+ years performing instrument calibration or instrumentation maintenance in a commercial, industrial, or institutional setting.
• Technical knowledge: Principles of instrument calibration and measurement accuracy; understanding of analog and digital control signals (0–10V, 4–20mA, resistance).
• Instrumentation tools: Proficiency with multimeters, signal generators, manometers, temperature references, and loop calibrators.
• Documentation: Ability to interpret specifications and tolerances; strong record-keeping and reporting skills.
• Familiarity with electronic measurement devices and control instrumentation.

Preferred Qualifications

• Hands-on experience with Johnson Controls Metasys or Automated Logic WebCTRL building automation systems.
• Experience with commercial or industrial HVAC systems.
• Familiarity with AiM or similar CMMS platforms.

Selected candidates will be required to complete all required background checks prior to the first day of employment.

Compensation

The Anticipated Hiring Range for this position is $22.00 - $24.00 per hour ($45,760 - $49,920 per year). This is a full-time position with UVA benefits. Employee benefits package highlights include:

Physical Demands
