About the Organization
Covering over 1,800 square miles, Desert Recreation District (DRD) provides recreational services to more than 380,000 residents throughout the Greater Coachella Valley. We work with municipalities in a collective effort to assure equitable service delivery to every community regardless of economic means. The District boundary has expanded in recent years to provide barrier‑free, safe service to more unincorporated areas of the Coachella Valley and municipalities not previously served. DRD is responsible for over 30 recreational facilities that include community and fitness centers, sports fields, swimming pools, a golf course and driving range, and various parks and open spaces. In addition, DRD creates and delivers quality programs, services and classes; and, facilitates leisure opportunities through partnerships that encourage residents to engage in healthy lifestyles and wellness activities. In the past year we have offered over 2,800 classes and programs, and more than 200 special events.

Under general supervision (Instructor I/II) or direction (Instructor III/IV), provides routine to advanced/specialized instruction in connection with a specific sport, recreation, and/or leisure program, class, and/or activity; conducts lessons and classes tailored to participant interests and abilities; provides demonstration and supervises program participants; continuously supervises and monitors participants to ensure their safety and well‑being; maintains various participant/program records and files; and performs related work as required.
Receives general supervision (Instructor I/II) or direction (Instructor III/IV) from assigned supervisory or management personnel. Exercises no direct supervision over staff.
This is the first working, journey‑level, classification in the Instructor series responsible for independently delivering a variety of lessons/classes within a specific sport, recreation, and/or leisure program area, including instructing groups of youth, teens, adults, and/or seniors in structured activities. Positions at this level exercise judgment and initiative in their assigned tasks, receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit.
This is the second working, journey‑level, classification in the Instructor series responsible for independently delivering a variety of lessons/classes within a specific sport, recreation, and/or leisure program area, including instructing groups of youth, teens, adults, and/or seniors in structured activities. Positions at this level exercise judgment and initiative in their assigned tasks, receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit.
This is the advanced journey‑level classification in the Instructor series responsible for performing the more difficult/specialized work assigned to the series, requiring advanced skills and training in the related subject matter area. Positions at this level exercise judgment and initiative in their assigned tasks, receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit.
This is the advanced journey‑level/specialist classification in the Instructor series responsible for performing the most difficult/specialized work assigned to the series, requiring extensive training and industry certification(s) in the related subject matter area. Positions at this level exercise judgment and initiative in their assigned tasks, receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit.
Each progressive level in the Instructor classification series performs substantially similar duties related to the delivery of sports, recreation, and/or leisure instructional classes and/or lessons. Allocation within the classification series is determined by the specialized nature of the particular instructional activity, market competition/availability of qualified instructors, and the level of knowledge, skills and abilities possessed by the incumbent as determined by the incumbent’s background, training, and activity‑related industry certification(s).

Instructor I/II/III/IV: Education: Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12th) grade.
Instructor I: Experience: One (1) year of experience providing direct instruction/training/coaching to participants in a sports, recreation, and/or leisure program related to the assigned area of responsibility.
Instructor II: Experience: Two (2) years of experience providing direct instruction/training/coaching to participants in a sports, recreation, and/or leisure program related to the assigned area of responsibility.
Instructor III: Experience: Three (3) years of experience providing direct instruction/training/coaching to participants in a sports, recreation, and/or leisure program related to the assigned area of responsibility.
Instructor IV: Experience: Four (4) years of experience providing direct instruction/training/coaching to participants in a sports, recreation, and/or leisure program related to the assigned area of responsibility.
Instructor I/II/III/IV: Possession of a valid California Driver’s License, to be maintained throughout employment.
Possession of valid certifications in First Aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) for adult, child and infant, to be maintained throughout employment.
Instructor I: Successful completion of the District’s proprietary instructor training modules and coursework within six (6) months of hire.
Instructor II: Possession of a valid, basic/entry level, license or certification required to perform work in the assigned area of instructional specialty from a national governing body, to be maintained throughout employment.
Instructor III: Possession of a valid, intermediate level license or certification related to assigned area of instructional specialty from a national governing body, to be maintained throughout employment.
Instructor IV: Possession of a valid, advanced level, license or certification related to assigned area of instructional specialty from a national governing body, to be maintained throughout employment.

Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator and to operate standard office equipment. When working in an external environment, position requires sitting, standing, walking on slippery surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, stopping, squatting, crouching, grasping and making repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects averaging a weight of 50 pounds, or heavier weights, in all cases with the use of proper equipment and/or assistance from other staff.
