Instructor, Chemistry (Full-Time | 9-Month Faculty)

Western Piedmont Community College (WPCC) seeks a student-centered, innovative, and collaborative Instructor of Chemistry to join our full-time faculty. This nine-month faculty position provides high-quality instruction in chemistry lecture and laboratory courses while fostering student success, scientific inquiry, and academic excellence.

The successful candidate will engage students through innovative teaching practices, laboratory experiences, and active learning while preparing them for transfer to four-year institutions, allied health programs, workforce opportunities, and careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

Under the supervision of the Department Head, the Instructor teaches assigned chemistry courses in classroom, laboratory, hybrid, and online learning environments in accordance with North Carolina Community College System standards, Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) requirements, and College policies.

Essential Responsibilities

Instruction

• Teach assigned chemistry lecture and laboratory courses using effective instructional strategies that promote student engagement and learning.
• Develop and maintain course syllabi, lesson plans, laboratory activities, instructional materials, and assessments aligned with established course learning outcomes.
• Deliver instruction in face-to-face, hybrid, and online learning environments.
• Utilize instructional technology and evidence-based teaching practices to enhance student learning.
• Maintain current knowledge within the discipline and continually improve instructional effectiveness.

Student Success

• Serve as an academic advisor and mentor to students.
• Maintain regular office hours and provide timely communication and feedback.
• Monitor student progress and connect students with appropriate campus resources.
• Maintain accurate attendance, grading, and instructional records in accordance with College policies.

Curriculum, Assessment, and Program Improvement

• Participate in curriculum development, review, and continuous improvement.
• Assess student learning outcomes and use assessment data to improve instruction.
• Assist with program planning, accreditation activities, and academic quality initiatives.
• Maintain course content consistent with current disciplinary standards and workforce expectations.

Laboratory Management

• Ensure safe operation of chemistry laboratories.
• Maintain compliance with laboratory safety standards, chemical hygiene procedures, and College policies.
• Assist with laboratory organization, equipment maintenance, inventory, and preparation of laboratory materials.
• Promote safe handling, storage, and disposal of chemicals.

College Service and Professional Engagement

• Participate in departmental, divisional, and College committees.
• Attend faculty meetings, commencement, professional development activities, and College events.
• Participate in student recruitment, retention, and outreach activities.
• Collaborate with faculty, staff, and community partners to advance College initiatives.
• Maintain professional competence through ongoing professional development.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Applicants must meet the minimum faculty credential requirements established by the North Carolina Community College System and Western Piedmont Community College.

• Master's degree in Chemistry; or
• Master's degree with at least 18 graduate semester hours in Chemistry.

Preference may be given to applicants who possess one or more of the following:

• College-level teaching experience in chemistry.
• Community college teaching experience.
• Experience teaching General Chemistry and chemistry laboratory courses.
• Experience teaching in multiple instructional modalities, including face-to-face, hybrid, and online.
• Experience using learning management systems and instructional technology.
• Knowledge of laboratory safety procedures, chemical hygiene plans, and OSHA regulations.
• Experience with curriculum development and student learning outcomes assessment.
• Demonstrated commitment to student success and inclusive teaching practices.
• Excellent communication, collaboration, and organizational skills.
