Instructor Biology - Adjunct Pool

The Houston Community College System (HCCS) is seeking an Instructor of Biology to join our Adjunct Faculty. The role supports the college curriculum, teaches courses, provides academic advising, and engages in professional and community service.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Teaching
- Demonstrate skill and knowledge in teaching the discipline.
- Continuously improve instruction by reviewing and applying innovative methodologies, techniques, and delivery methods.
- Develop and use a syllabus for each course or laboratory, submit one copy to the department chair.
- Plan, develop, and use a variety of teaching methods and materials that assist students in meeting course objectives and are appropriate for diverse backgrounds and learning styles.
- Evaluate students, inform them of progress in a timely manner.
- Keep accurate student records and submit related reports within requested timelines.
- Review, evaluate, and recommend student textbooks and learning materials.
- Teach courses at various times and locations in response to institutional needs.
- Use equipment and facilities responsibly; assist the chair with maintenance of instructional laboratories where appropriate.
- Demonstrate competence and interest in the use of technology and willingness to explore new instructional methodologies.
- Academic Advising
- Maintain professional relationships with students, colleagues, and community.
- Provide access to students through office hours, electronic communication, and other appropriate methods; advise on instructional or program issues.
- Make presentations on academic fields, program objectives, opportunities for further study and career options.
- Create and maintain a website with the specified information.
- Collaborate with the Chair on advising activities as needed by the College and Department.
- Professional Development
- Establish annual objectives for professional growth in consultation with the department chair.
- Keep pace with developments in the discipline.
- Learn and apply technologies that support student learning.
- Participate in evaluation processes for self, department, and college.
- Institutional and Community Service
- Participate in scheduled institutional service activities.
- Participate in discipline committee or program meetings and activities.
- Actively participate in department, college, or system meetings and/or committees.
- Adhere to all HCCS policies and procedures.
- Participate in college-related activities such as student activities, faculty selection, community education, recruitment, and special programs.
- Participate in activities that foster goodwill and promote the mission of HCCS.
- Participate in activities required for program and college accreditation standards.
- Assist in the planning process for departmental objectives, goals, and budget priorities.
- Review, evaluate, and revise program curricula and practices to ensure compliance with professional standards and state guidelines.
- Assist in the articulation of courses and programs with secondary and post-secondary institutions.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Education: Completed at least 18 graduate hours in Biology and hold a Master’s degree. Official transcript(s) confirming the degree must accompany the application.
- Experience: Minimum of one year of college level teaching experience or five to ten years of related work experience.
