Job summary

Lake Forest Academy is seeking an Instructor and Assistant Dean of Students to lead student leadership, life, and school activities while teaching within the Global department for grades 9–12. The role includes evening and weekend residential coaching duties and international travel with students.

A state teaching license is not required, and on‑campus residency is expected during the 10‑month academic year.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in History, International Relations or a closely related field (or foreign equivalent) and 3 years of relevant experience.
  • At least three years of experience with boarding school students, diverse backgrounds, student leadership groups and advising student clubs.
  • Experience teaching in a Global Educational Program and leading international student trips; coaching high school athletics.
  • Experience living and studying abroad; collegiate-level sports.
  • On-campus residence in Lake Forest, Illinois during the 10‑month academic calendar with residential duties; US driver’s license required.

The Instructor & Assistant Dean of Students position serves an administrative role overseeing student leadership, student life, and school activities. The position also involves teaching a range of academic courses within the Global department in a high school (grades 9-12) setting, as well as evening and weekend residential and athletic coaching duties. A state teaching license is not required.

Key Responsibilities:

Student Leadership and Activities

Oversee student leadership, student life, and school activities;

Oversee, create, and implement leadership development programming for students and curriculum;

Oversee faculty Class Advisors and oversee student club leadership and the other leadership groups on campus, including Student Council and Prefects;

Partner with members of the Dean of Students to support all major all-school activities and events;

Manage and organize All-School Meetings and Morning Meetings in partnership with community members and student leaders;

Partner with the Dean of Students in support of disciplinary matters; and

Foster and cultivate school spirit and morale amongst students, staff, and faculty.

Teaching/General Faculty Responsibilities

Teach a range of academic courses within the Global department, including lesson plans and curriculum for each semester

Lead student international trips within the Global department;

Assess students’ abilities, strengths, and weaknesses, and adjust the classroom instruction to challenge and improve each student’s unique abilities;

Grade student assignments and exams on a timely basis;

Develop and enforce classroom rules and administrative policies to ensure a classroom atmosphere that inspires learning and foster respect for all students;

Write formal comments and progress reports on students eight times per year;

Schedule parent meetings as needed;

Maintain a Professional Growth Plan in consultation with the department chair and Dean of Faculty;

Serve as an academic advisor to a small group of students;

Fulfill co-curricular duties through a points system; and

Serve on committees and task forces.

Residential Program/Extracurricular Responsibilities

Supervise students within an assigned dorm once a week and seven (7) weekends per school year, including one holiday weekend;

Supervise individual weekend activities for students, both on and off campus;

Transport students to activities off campus;

Participate in athletic activities on campus, including travel as needed to away games/tournaments; and

Talk to prospective students and parents about the program.

Requirements:

Position requires a Bachelor’s degree in History, International Relations or a closely related field (or foreign equivalent); and 3 years of relevant experience. Position requires at least three (3) years of experience with each of the following:

Working with students in a boarding school environment;

Serving students with diverse backgrounds, interests, goals, and abilities;

Working with student leadership groups and advising student clubs;

Teaching in a Global Educational Program;

Leading international student trips; and

Coaching high school level athletics.

Position also requires experience living and studying abroad in order to provide real world insight into Global curriculum; and playing sports at the collegiate level.

Position requires on-campus residence in Lake Forest, Illinois during the 10-month academic calendar year, this includes weeknight and weekend residential duties. Residential duties include coverage one evening per week until midnight and seven assigned weekends per school year, including at least one major holiday. Weekly evening duties include supervising boarding students within the assigned dormitory and checking them in at the end of the evening. Weekend duties include sponsoring activities for students, both on and off campus, and evening check-ins.

Domestic travel required up to 10% of time to attend conferences/workshops and transport students for school-related activities; and one potential international trip per school year to accompany students in the global program.

Must have a valid U.S. driver's license to transport students locally in the school's 14-seater buses and minivans as part of athletic activities, residential duties and field trips.
