Job summary

Chicago Public Schools is seeking an Instructor Assistant to support teachers and students in instructional activities, supervise lunch and playground, and assist with innovative education projects.

Under supervision, you will tutor students, help collect and grade homework, and communicate with parents after consultation with teachers. A college associate degree or 60 credits and paraprofessional assessment, with experience as a CPS Teacher Assistant, are required.

Qualifications

  • Requires Associate’s degree or 60 college credits from an appropriately accredited college/university, or completion of a state paraprofessional assessment, plus at least 1 year of CPS Teacher Assistant experience.
  • General knowledge of school-aged children behavior and basic educational methods; strong English grammar and spelling; adherence to CPS rules.

  • Assist teachers in instruction and related activities.
  • Support students in completing classroom assignments and understanding material.
  • Supervise students during lunch and playground periods.
  • Assist in collecting and grading homework and exams under teacher supervision.

JOB DESCRIPTION ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CLASS TITLE: Instructor Assistant

CHARACTERISTICS OF THE CLASS: Under supervision, assists teachers holding a valid state certificate in the instruction of pupils at schools, including schools involved in the Chicago Effective Schools Project; and performs related duties as required.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Provides instruction related support services under the direction of teachers, provides support and assistance to the local school planning team, assists in the supervision of students during lunchroom and playground activities, participates and assists with the implementation of innovative education activities; assists in the implementation of inservices for other staff, assists students in understanding and completing classroom assignments, greets and directs visitors to appropriate areas of the school, consults with teachers regarding problems, concerns, and special interests of individual students and contacts parents and guardians after consultation with the teacher; operates audio-visual equipment such as video cassette recorders, movie projectors, film strip projectors, tape recorders, and phonographs; provides tutoring services to students under the supervision of the classroom teacher; assists in collecting and grading students’ homework assignments and examination materials under the supervision of the classroom teacher; collects daily classroom absentee reports and contacts parents and guardians to verify causes of student absences; may assist elementary school teachers with wraps and toilet recesses as necessary; may assist in the supervision of the school procedure to sell public transportation passes to students.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Training and Experience. Completion of an Associate’s degree from a college or university accredited by the North Central Association or another regional accrediting body, or the successful completion of at least sixty (60) semester hours of college credit at a college or university accredited by the North Central Association or another regional accrediting body, or the successful completion of a state approved paraprofessional assessment, supplemented by at least one year of work experience as a Chicago Public Schools’ Teacher Assistant.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skill. General knowledge of the behavior patterns of school-aged children, knowledge of basic educational methods and techniques, working knowledge of proper English grammar and spelling, good knowledge of Chicago Public Schools rules and regulations.

Ability to follow and confer written and oral instructions, ability to work with and for school-aged children, ability to maintain an orderly classroom environment.

Good oral and written communication skills, good skill in basic arithmetic, demonstrated skill in working with school-aged children.

Physical Requirements. Light Work: Exerting up to twenty (20) pounds of force occasionally, or up to ten (10) pounds of force frequently, or a negligible amount of force frequently to move objects. Even though weight of force moved may be only a negligible amount, a position should be rated as Light Work (1) when it requires walking or standing to a significant degree; or (2) when it requires sitting most of the time but entails pushing or pulling of arm controls.
