Job summary

Educational Services Commission of New Jersey seeks an Instructional Sub Aide for Center for Lifelong Learning, a ten-month position. The role supports instruction in a Special Education setting with Autistic and multiple disabled students.

Qualifications

Substitute Aides need to assist the teacher with classroom instruction and management in a Special Education School for Autistic and Multiple Disabled students.

Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Submit to and pass a criminal background check
  • Submit to and pass a physical examination within 30 days of employment
  • Knowledge of child growth and development, demonstrated ability to assist with instructional activities in all academic areas
  • Demonstrated attitude for successful completion of tasks assigned
  • Good communication skills; verbal, written, and listening in order to properly follow procedures as per student IEPs
  • Knowledge of diverse needs of children with disabilities and appropriate intervention practices

Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

Scope

The Instructional Aide will report to the Educational Services Site Administrator of the assigned Commission program and will assume all responsibilities as assigned pertaining to aide's duties. The aide will provide students with a positive atmosphere and environment in which to learn and will assist the teacher in taking care of the physical and emotional needs of the student.

Reports To

Building Principal, Program Director or Supervisor OR Program Administrator.

Performance Responsibilities
  • Assist in providing a school atmosphere that promotes positive psychosocial development and provides constructive learning experiences.
  • Establish oneself as a positive influence in the school's climate and culture.
  • Demonstrate ability to work in collaboration with students, faculty, parents, coworkers, and administration.
  • Maintain a professional perspective at all times, avoiding emotional internalization of student behaviors or mannerisms.
  • Maintain ongoing communication with classroom teacher(s) and administration.
  • Data collection as determined by student IEPs.
  • Assist the classroom teacher(s) and administration with non‑teaching duties, including but not limited to: assisting students with projects, crafts, curriculum tasks, bus transportation, student supervision, clerical work, and managing a conducive learning environment.
  • Attend trainings, meetings, and special programs as required.
  • Adhere to all published school policies and regulations, including those pertaining to employee attendance, work invoices, confidentiality, student supervision, and safety.
Miscellaneous

Perform other duties as may be assigned by the Building Principal or Program Administrator.

Physical Requirements
  • Standing for intermittent periods of time, depending on the students' needs and classroom activities.
  • Walking to assist students from class to class, participation in emergency drills, physical education class, monitoring student behavior and safety during recess and transport.
  • Bending to assist student mobility, wheelchair access, lifting, and physical direction or restraint.
  • Lifting with hands and arms to assist positioning or lifting of students.
  • Pushing with whole body to move a student in a wheelchair or adaptive equipment.
  • Seeing to observe classroom and hallway activities to ensure student safety.

The Instructional Aide position is classified as Medium Work: exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Terms of Employment

Ten‑month annual contract, non‑tenurable and/or extended school year.

Evaluation

Annual, minimum of one evaluation per year.

Hourly Rate

$20 per hour as needed.
