Job summary

Young Harris College seeks an Instructional Designer to lead the design, development, and continuous improvement of classroom, online, and hybrid courses on campus. The role partners with faculty to enhance teaching through sound pedagogy and instructional technologies that boost engagement and outcomes.

The position oversees LMS use, supports online course delivery, and collaborates with academic leadership and IT to align instructional technology with the college’s mission.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in instructional design, educational technology, curriculum and instruction, or related field.
  • Master's degree preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience designing online, in-person, or hybrid courses in higher education.
  • Strong knowledge of instructional design frameworks and online pedagogy.
  • Experience applying accessibility standards and Universal Design for Learning (UDL).
  • Exceptional interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency with learning management systems (Moodle preferred).
  • Proven ability to partner with faculty and academic leadership to advance teaching and learning.
  • Familiarity with Quality Matters or other QA frameworks for online learning.
  • Commitment to academic integrity through technologies and course design.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with faculty to design, develop, and revise classroom, online, and hybrid course materials, aligning objectives with instructional technologies.
  • Coordinate the proposal, development, review, and evaluation of online courses with the Dean of Dual Enrollment & Distance Learning.
  • Plan and deliver training for faculty on instructional technologies and teaching methodologies.
  • Serve as primary resource for faculty on LMS usage and digital tools.
  • Develop and maintain online training materials to support faculty use of educational technologies.
  • Research, evaluate, and recommend emerging instructional technologies, including AI, to enhance course design.
  • Collaborate with IT to ensure LMS reliability and effectiveness.

Summary

The Instructional Designer, an on-campus and in-person position, leads the design, development, and continuous improvement of classroom, online, and hybrid courses and programs. This position partners closely with faculty to enhance teaching effectiveness through the integration of sound pedagogical practices and instructional technologies that support student engagement and learning outcomes. The position supports institutional goals related to quality assurance, academic integrity, accessibility, and innovation in digital learning. Serving as the primary resource for the institution’s learning management system (LMS), the Instructional Designer provides both strategic oversight and day-to-day support for online course delivery. The role collaborates extensively with academic leadership and the Office of Information Technology to ensure the effective implementation and support of instructional technologies aligned with the college’s academic mission.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with faculty to design, develop, and revise classroom, online, and hybrid course materials, aligning pedagogical objectives with appropriate instructional technologies
  • Coordinate the proposal, development, review, and evaluation of online courses, and support decision-making related to online course offerings in collaboration with the Dean of Dual Enrollment & Distance Learning
  • Plan and deliver individual and group training for faculty on instructional technologies and effective teaching methodologies, in collaboration with academic leadership
  • Serve as the primary resource for faculty on the use of the LMS and other digital tools to support the delivery of course content
  • Develop and maintain online training materials and resources to support faculty use of educational technologies
  • Research, evaluate, and recommend emerging instructional technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), to enhance course design, delivery, and support
  • Collaborate with the Office of Information Technology to ensure the reliability, functionality, and effectiveness of the LMS and other instructional systems
Education and/or Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in instructional design, educational technology, curriculum and instruction, or a related field is required.
  • Master's degree is preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience designing and developing online, in-person, or hybrid courses within a higher education environment is required.
  • Strong knowledge of instructional design frameworks, learning theory, and effective online pedagogy is required.
  • Experience applying accessibility standards and Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles in digital course design is required.
  • Exceptional interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills, with the ability to consult effectively across disciplines and organizational levels is required.
  • Proficiency with learning management systems and related instructional technologies is required. Moodle experience is strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated success partnering with faculty and academic leadership to advance institutional goals for teaching and learning is preferred.
  • Familiarity with Quality Matters or other recognized quality assurance frameworks for online learning is preferred.
  • Commitment to and experience with ensuring academic integrity through technologies and course design.
