Job summary

Boston Public Schools seeks an exceptional Instructional Coach for Perkins Elementary in Boston, MA. This anticipated long-term substitute position is expected to start on October 2, with per diem pay and long-term assignments thereafter.

The role supports high expectations, data-driven instruction, and professional development for teachers, with responsibilities including demonstration classes, in-class coaching, and collaboration with school leaders.

Qualifications

  • Hold a valid Massachusetts Teaching License in appropriate content area.
  • Experience and demonstrated expertise as a teacher of relevant content and/or subjects.
  • Demonstrated success working with teachers and administrators as a professional development provider, team leader, and/or facilitator.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Current authorization to work in the United States - Candidates must have such authorization by their first day of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Set up effective classroom environments, assist in planning effective lessons, conduct and debrief demonstration classes, co-teach occasional classes, provide in-class coaching, including videotaping and debriefing lessons, assist in planning school-based professional development during and after school.
  • Assist in the proper implementation of mid- and end-of-year assessments, and the analysis and response to results.
  • Maintain an up-to-date log of all activities in and out of classrooms, including activities, objectives, teachers worked with, outcomes, next steps, and timelines.
  • Monitor individual teacher progress.
  • Monitor teacher participation in professional development activities, and the consequent implementation of curriculum and instructional strategies by meeting with principals and other school supervisors.
  • Participate in all professional development activities, including weekly meetings focused on implementation coordination, problem-solving, and coaches' professional development, and additional training opportunities provided during the school year and, if possible, during the summer.
  • Share lead responsibility for selected elements of the instructional focus (e.g., assessment development, data gathering, and analysis, professional development regarding selected instructional strategies). Perform additional responsibilities as requested by the Principal.

THIS IS AN ANTICIPATED LONG-TERM SUB POSITION that is expected to start on October 2nd with an end date tbd. Please note that all substitute teachers are hired as per diem subs, even when placed in long-term assignments. All substitutes begin at the per diem rate of pay. Responsibilities

Qualification - Preferred

  • Hold an SEI endorsement or a dual certification in ESL.
  • Experience working in an urban setting.
  • Special education license, experience, and/or expertise.
  • BPS values linguistic diversity and believes that candidates who speak another language bring added value to the classroom, school, and district culture and diversity. BPS is particularly interested in candidates who are fluent in one of BPS' official languages: Spanish, Creole (Cape Verdean), Creole (Haitian), Chinese, Vietnamese, Portuguese, & Somali.
  • In order to best serve all students, BPS prefers all core content teachers to be certified in their subject area and one or both of the following: Moderate Disabilities, English as a Second Language (at the appropriate grade level(s)).

The start and end times of BPS schools vary, as do the lengths of the school day. Some BPS schools have a longer school day through the "Schedule A" Expanded Learning Time (ELT) agreement.
