Job summary

Lane Education Service District is seeking an Instructional Assistant for the Life Skills Program on a part-time basis. This role provides instructional, behavioral, and daily living support to students with moderate to severe disabilities under a licensed teacher, with a 3.5 hour daily schedule and 0.4375 FTE.

POSITION TITLE: Instructional Assistant, Life Skills Program

FLSA STATUS/CLASSIFICATION: Non-exempt, Classified
SALARY PLACEMENT: Instructional Assistant Salary Schedule

POSITION PURPOSE/SUMMARY:
This position provides instructional, behavioral, and individualized support to students under the direction of a licensed teacher and in accordance with applicable state and federal requirements and District policies and procedures. The position supports the implementation of instructional and behavior support plans designed to meet the individual needs of students with moderate to severe disabilities, including development of functional, communication, social, and independent living skills.

As a member of the educational team, the position supports students in developing greater independence and participation in school and community activities and assists with identified personal care, health, and daily living needs according to established instructions, protocols, and student plans.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

To provide instructional support by:

  • Assisting the classroom teacher with the planning and implementation of instructional activities, including strategies for reinforcing instructional material and skills.
  • Implementing instructional strategies and activities under the direction of the classroom teacher to support student skill development, independence, and participation.
  • Supporting students in developing functional, communication, social, and independent living skills.
  • Supporting student participation and integration in school and community activities as appropriate to the student's educational program.
  • Preparing and organizing instructional materials and other resources to support teaching and learning.
  • Collecting student data as directed by the classroom teacher.
  • Communicating with the classroom teacher regarding student performance, progress, and assessment activities.

To provide behavioral and social-emotional support by:

  • Implementing behavior support plans using strategies and techniques identified in the student's plan and as directed by the classroom teacher or other appropriate staff.
  • Supporting classroom management practices in accordance with District policies and established classroom procedures.
  • Establishing and maintaining appropriate professional relationships and boundaries with students.
  • Supporting students in developing appropriate behavioral, social, and interpersonal skills.

To support individualized student needs by:

  • Providing assistance with identified activities of daily living and personal care needs, including toileting, feeding, and other assigned personal care activities, according to student plans, established procedures, and staff direction.
  • Supporting identified health-related needs, including medication administration or other health procedures, when assigned and in accordance with established instructions, protocols, and required training.
  • Implementing assigned supports or activities related to student therapy or other specialized services as directed by the appropriate professional and in accordance with established plans and procedures.
  • Supporting students in developing greater independence in daily routines and functional activities.

To support student safety and supervision by:

  • Supervising students in school and community settings in accordance with established procedures to support student and staff safety.
  • Following established safety procedures and responding appropriately to student behavioral, health, and safety needs.
  • Maintaining confidentiality regarding student and staff information in accordance with applicable law and District policy.

To support effective school operations by:

  • Working cooperatively as a member of the school and educational team.
  • Completing assigned responsibilities in accordance with District policies, procedures, and applicable requirements.
  • Maintaining regular attendance.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

Education and Experience

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students and school staff.
  • Ability to follow teacher direction, including written instructional and behavior support plans.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working in a public school, educational, social service, or community setting supporting students with moderate to severe disabilities.
  • Experience supporting students who use alternative or augmentative means of communication.
  • Experience providing instructional, personal care, or daily living supports to students with disabilities.
  • Current First Aid/CPR certification.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of basic instructional, behavioral, and student support practices appropriate for students with diverse disabilities and support needs.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal directions and implement instructional and behavior support strategies as directed.
  • Ability to establish and maintain appropriate professional relationships and boundaries with students.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with students, teachers, and other school staff, including supporting students who use alternative or augmentative means of communication.
  • Ability to provide personal care and daily living support while maintaining student dignity, privacy, and safety.
  • Ability to collect and maintain accurate student data and documentation.
  • Ability to respond appropriately to student behavioral, health, and safety needs while following established procedures and maintaining student dignity.
  • Ability to work cooperatively as a member of a school team and maintain confidentiality regarding student and staff information.
Other Requirements
  • Ability to successfully complete required District training and comply with applicable District policies and procedures.
  • Ability to successfully complete required training related to assigned student health, personal care, safety, behavioral, or other specialized supports.
  • Ability to successfully complete required criminal history and facility background checks.
  • First Aid/CPR certification may be required based on assignment.
  • Completion of training and certification for restraint and seclusion is required for this role.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS

WORKING ENVIRONMENT/CONDITIONS

The incumbent generally works in an indoor environment, however, may occasionally encounter inclement weather during community activities. The incumbent may work with students who demonstrate agitated or aggressive behaviors. The incumbent may be exposed to bodily fluids in assisting students with using the restrooms and in tending to injury and illness.

  • Demonstrate professionalism and appropriate judgment in behavior, speech, and dress in a neat, clean, and appropriate professional manner for the assignment and work setting.
  • Utilize appropriate equipment and software as established for agency use as well as other equipment and software appropriate to the assignment.
  • Maintain regular and punctual attendance.
  • Confer regularly with immediate supervisor.
  • Follow all District work procedures and reasonable requests by proper authority.
  • Perform program responsibilities in accordance with statutes, administrative rules, policies, and collective bargaining agreements.
