Job Description
Qualifications
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Qualifications required under “No Child Left Behind”: Associate’s Degree, or 48 semester hours of college credits, or successful completion of Work Keys Tests plus 96 contact hours of staff development.
- Valid Driver’s License with a good driving record.
- CDL License with passenger school bus endorsement and current Bus Drivers Pocket Card.
Nature of Work
An Instructional Assistant/Bus Driver supports the teacher in student instruction. Tasks include teaching assistance, operating school transport vehicles, and following safety regulations. Work is directed by policy with limited supervision from a teacher or principal.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Working knowledge of effective methods for working with children.
- Knowledge of core subjects at the assigned grade level.
- Some knowledge of school organization and community.
- Understanding of expected child behavior and developmental stages.
- Ability to operate audiovisual equipment and office machines.

- Understand safe bus operation and traffic laws.

- Maintain discipline and cleanliness of the bus; complete required reports.

- Conduct courteous contact with parents, guardians, students, and staff.
- Establish effective working relationships.
Essential Job Functions
- Give group and individualized instruction as prescribed.
- Demonstrate instructional activities and monitor student work.
- Provide timely feedback and maintain student focus.
- Report progress, attendance, and behavior to teacher.
- Arrange classroom furnishings and materials; prepare visual aids.
- Score papers, distribute materials, and attend workshops.
- Enter data into health records and file data per regulations.
- Supervise students in classroom and other locations.
- Create and distribute awards for positive behavior; promote self‑esteem.
- Teach citizenship, social skills, and respect for others.
- Address and reconcile minor conflicts; participate in discipline policy development.
- Apply approved disciplinary methods; report issues to teacher or principal.
- Administer first aid and seek assistance for non‑routine injuries.
- Observe and enforce safety regulations on school buses; clear and evacuate the bus during emergencies.
- Maintain knowledge of school bus handbook and safety protocols.
- Enforce discipline plan for bus students, reporting violations to principal.
- Release students only at authorized stops.
- Keep bus clean and free of hazardous items.
- Report all accidents per transportation operating instructions and remain on scene until released.
- Complete time card and required reports.
- Secure vehicle upon completion of runs; conduct visual inspections and secure windows/doors.
- Maintain professional relationships with parents, guardians, and school personnel.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements
- Associate degree preferred.
- Citizenship, residency, or work visa required.
