JOB SUMMARY/PURPOSE:

To assist the teacher in achieving teaching objectives by working with individual students or small groups to help them reach the skill levels of the class as a whole.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  1. Presents subject matter to groups of students using various methods such as lectures, discussions, supervised role-playing, and participating in activities when needed.
  2. Assists students, individually or in groups, with lesson assignments to reinforce learning concepts and keep them on task.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. Experience working with students.
  2. Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  3. Ability to set limits and provide structure for students.

Education: Must have successfully completed sixty college credit hours.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

Teacher/Student Duties:

  • Administers, scores, and records achievement and diagnostic tests as recommended by the teacher for individual students.
  • Works with individual students or small groups to reinforce learning of material or skills introduced by the teacher.
  • Assists the teacher in devising strategies based on individual students' needs, interests, and abilities.
  • Distributes and collects workbooks, papers, and other instructional materials.
  • Guides independent, enrichment, and remedial work assigned by the teacher.
  • Supervises students during emergency drills, assemblies, play periods, and field trips.
  • Keeps classroom displays up-to-date.
  • Assists with large group activities such as drill work, reading aloud, and storytelling.
  • Reads to students, listens to students read, and participates in oral communication activities.
  • Assists students in the library or media center.
  • Checks notebooks, corrects papers, supervises testing and make-up work.
  • Records student attendance.
  • Collects and records collections of money.
  • Helps students with clothing, lunch routines, wash-up, and toilet routines.
  • Alerts the regular teacher to any student issues or special needs.
  • Serves as the main resource for substitute teachers.
  • Maintains ethical behavior and confidentiality regarding students.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Operates and cares for instructional equipment.
