Job summary

The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services, Division of State-Operated Specialty Care, seeks an Institutional Superintendent to lead Cherokee Mental Health Institute (CMHI) and the Civil Commitment Unit for Sex Offenders (CCUSO). This is a full-time role with a Monday–Friday schedule and on-call duties, with potential travel and some remote work with approval.

• Graduation from an accredited four year college or university and the equivalent of five years of full-time management experience in a correctional, mental health, intellectual disability or juvenile correctional or training facility.
• Background check required prior to consideration.
• Willingness to travel and on-call responsibilities.

Responsibilities

• Lead and manage a team of direct care, administrative, and clinical professionals.
• Provide strategic direction and day-to-day operational oversight of facilities.
• Manage the budget and ensure licensing/accreditation compliance.
• Represent the facility with key stakeholders including the Iowa legislature, law enforcement, and policy makers.
• Coordinate on-call scheduling and travel as needed.
