Job summary

The University of Utah’s Institutional Review Board Administrator coordinates and oversees all technical, operational and regulatory aspects of human research protections and compliance for the IRB. You provide direct consultation, facilitation, decision support and educational programming to research faculty and staff.

Responsibilities include initial protocol review, guidance to investigators, development of IRB policies and training programs, and regular reporting on IRB activities.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field plus four years related experience or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience) required.
  • Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills are also required.
  • Master's degree in a related field, management experience, knowledge of human research Federal regulations, medical terminology preferred.

Job Summary

Coordinates and oversees all technical, operational and regulatoryissues associated with human research protections and compliancefor the Institutional Review Board (IRB). Provides directconsultation, facilitation, decision support and educationalprogramming to research faculty and staff.

Responsibilities
Essential Functions
  • 1. Conducts initial review of human research protocol applications,reviewing all amendments and determining the level of risk toensure compliance with appropriate regulations, IRB guidelines andinstitutional policies.
  • 2. Approves deviations from policy, clarifies special conditionsand analyzes differences from initial protocol applications.
  • 3. Interprets and provides comprehensive guidance to principalinvestigators, research and support staff on complex humansubjects' research regulations. Ensures the conduct of high qualityhuman subject research.
  • 4. Plans, develops and administers comprehensive educationalprograms pertaining to human research protections and IRB reviewprocesses for members of the IRB principal investigators, researchand support staff.
  • 5. Makes recommendations to the ongoing development of electronicprotocol submission and tracking system. Develops and maintains webpages and web-based training programs.
  • 6. Develops and revises IRB office policies and procedures, formsand content of guidelines and other materials posted on the IRBwebsite.
  • 7. Responds to external compliance audits. Regularly preparesreports on IRB office activities and assesses regulatory compliancewith IRB documentation requirements.
  • 8. Meets with members of research staffs to address process andprocedure improvements. Serves on various Universitycommittees.
  • 9. Responsible for the day-to-day supervision of the IRB supportstaff, which includes training, evaluating performance, ensuringadequate office coverage and ensuring procedural deadlines aremet.
Problem Solving

Incumbents face the challenge of staying abreast of continuallychanging human research regulations in order to make changes tointernal policies and procedures to ensure compliance with the newregulations, as well as communicating the changes in an effectiveand timely manner. Incumbents use considerable discretion intheirdaily work and must communicate effectively with a variety ofconstituencies regarding delicate matters.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a related field plus four years relatedexperience or equivalency (one year of education can be substitutedfor two years of related work experience) required. Demonstratedhuman relations and effective communication skills are alsorequired.

Master's degree in a related field, management experience,knowledge of human research Federal regulations, medicalterminology preferred. Experience in the design and conduct ofeducational or training and IRB certification also preferred.

This position is not responsible for providing patient care.
